Born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804. Many of hawthornes relatives were puritan legacies so he was raised with strong puritan beliefs. Hawthorne eventually added a "w" to his name to distant himself from the rest of his family. Hawthorne's dad passed away so they moved in with his uncle. During this time hawthorne was in a serious injury and wasn't able to move around. Due to this he found love for reading and writing. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College from 1821 to 1825. he made many famous friends. Which he benefited from later on in his life. After college Hawthorne was home sick so stayed home for 12 years. During this time he found his voice as a writer, writing several self published stories.

Further down the road he met Sophia Peabody, a painter, illustrator, and transcendentalist. The couple was married on July 9, 1842. They quickly settled in Concord, Massachusetts where they had three children. Hawthorne moved to Salem. He landed a job as surveyor in the Salem Custom House. However, when Zachary Taylor was elected, Hawthorne lost his appointment. The dismissal turned into a blessing giving him time to write, The Scarlet Letter. The book was one of the first mass-produced publications in the United States and its wide distribution made Hawthorne famous.

Though throughout the book their are many themes, the ones that stands out the most is sin and society. Hester prin sinned therefore creating a backlash from the rest of the people. They publically humiliate her, make her feel like an outcast, and make her wear the scarlet letter. Hester accepts this in a way it made her who she is. Even though hester is an outcast she doesn't leave, because she feels in a way it'd be like society ruling over her.

In the book hester starts doing charity work such as making clothes for the poor, but even so she is still looked down upon. As she goes about town, children mock her, women look at the scarlet letter and then quickly glance away judging. Hester thinks about how everyone should have a letter. They judge her and have their own sins. It shows how harsh society is. No one is perfect but they continue to judge and be mean to others.

The Scarlet Letter- At first the letter symbolizes sin and her punishment but hester makes it beautiful. She makes it her own showing Hester taking control of her own punishment. The letter shows her talent and artistic skill, which allow her to make a living as a single parent in Puritan Boston. These qualities of strength and independence set her apart—as does her love of beauty. As the story line progresses her hard work and charity end up changing how people view the letter. Some people even "refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification," meaning that they forget, or choose to forget, that it symbolizes sin. Instead, they say that the "A" stands for "Able"—as in, Hester is such an able woman.

Pearl- In Hesters eye pearl is her redemption, her only treasure. ester says she called er pearl because she is a great price, "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it"

Life as a Puritan

Puritans were a sect of Protestant Christians influenced by Calvinism, the idea that salvation is predestined. It's a community specifically designed to be religiously pure, which means being secularly strict. Law and religion form the heart of the town. i imagine living as a puritan at this time was harsh. There many rules, the men were superior, no real freedom and under harsh judgement by everyone around. The author also describes the people as two faced, they judge everyone and think they are above all else. The puritans are suppose to be pure and live a simple life. However hawthorne describes the atmosphere in this book as if they all believed in doing good, but don't actually do that and when people have bigger mistakes they all bash on them.

After doing some more research the puritans was a society that believed in good education and morals. Even though if their rules were broken people would face a very harsh punishment; puritans also had celebrations and festivals. the puritans wanted to life a simple god filled life.
