There are many benefits for young people who help in the community. Firstly, it encourages them to develop positive work habits. Developing these will prepare them for successful careers. For example, if teenagers learn responsibility, it will be valuable to future employers and this may help them get a better job. Another advantage to this idea is it improves society. When teenagers are active it inspires others in the community. To understand this, adolescents are usually called lazy but in this case older people would open up to them with knowledge and friendship, which would benefit all.

Despite this, there are some disadvantages which must not be ignored. The first detrimental one is the impact on the mental health of teenagers. Many already have part time jobs so if they are made to volunteer extra hours, they could become anxious and depressed. Secondly, it might put other people in the community out of work. If many people are volunteering it would reduce the need for paid workers. As a result those people would lose their jobs.
