Plants play an important role in our environment and in our lives. I chose this picture because it breaks their role down simply. Plants provide us with the things that we don't think about, but that we rely on for survival. The most obvious being for the production of oxygen that we breathe and for the primary food source in our food chain. Without plants to be eaten, all the animals would die out even if there was an alternate source of oxygen.

I chose this video because Crash Course is a resource I use often to get a better grasp on what I am learning in school. In this particular video, the way he explains how photosynthesis takes place and the animations that he uses really help with understanding the more in depth parts of photosynthesis. The concept of photosynthesis (plants using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and release oxygen and water) is easy to grasp but understanding how that happens is where it gets confusing. Having it explained in layman's terms and animated the way it is in this video becomes really useful.

The tropical rainforest is in a lot of danger. Timber industries are suspected to be the in the top causes of the vast habitat destruction. Animals are dying out with the loss of their habitats as more and more species are on the verge of going extinct. Plant species native to the rainforests are dying off as well.

Having a reliable source of food that could produced and controlled by the farmers allowed humans to stop migrating. Before they would have to follow the food (animals) as the animals migrated or they depleted the supply in an area. The agricultural (Neolithic) revolution allowed for more stability and security for the humans. This along with the better nutrition from reliable crops allowed the reproduction rates to increase as people were having more babies more rapidly. The creation of stable families living in a household within a community of other families became the norm for a majority of people.

This picture represents the genetic modification of plants and crops that began after the third agricultural revolution. Plants were genetically modified to meet the needs of the people, including a resistance to pests and viruses, as well as an increase in the nutrition content of the plants. This has come to have both positive and negative effects on society, as some of the modifications are positive, while others are showing to produce problems in health when consumed long term in large amounts.

I believe that the use of plant derived drugs like taxol and vincristine for cancer treatment is hugely influential on our healthcare advancements. In the article it states that over 60 percent of anticancer drugs are natural products or have been developed from plant based properties. Taxol and vincristine work as chemotherapy drugs to inhibit the growth of the cancer cells in patients battling many different types of cancers.

Unless something changes, our environment is going to continue to crumble until we simply don't have enough sustainable resources to support life anymore. The climate change is going to continue to shrink the polar ice caps, which will eventually flood most coastlines making them inhabitable. This will push the growing population closer together, creating more habitat destruction. Resources will quickly deplete as the needs for these moving populations will need to be met, killing off and forcing away the animals. The entire ecosystem will completelty fall apart.
