Occupy Wall Street March

On September 19th, 2011, approximately 1,000 Americans marched at Wall Street, advocating for financial equality, condemning economic political influence, and bringing light to a broken American economic system. The American people felt that they had received the short end of the stick from banks and demanded justice. This march was inspired by the Great Recession and previous marches in the Middle East and was advanced through social media platforms. The results of Occupy were that left-wing politics began to adopt a more progressive mindset and focus more on the financial concerns of the American people. This march inspired many other marches in other countries and cities, making the "Occupy Wall Street" movement a major political and financial advancement of this decade.

2016 Election Fraud

One of the major fears from 2016 was the integrity of the presidential election. This election was historically one of the most divided and unique America had seen. Hillary Clinton had won the popular vote and Donald Trump the electoral vote. Although, this election was concerning to many because of alarming evidence of Russian interference. After a thorough investigation, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement to explain how the Russian involvement was to "undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency (History.com Editors).” The alleged Russian involvement did indeed cause the American people to question and worry about the process and reliability of the election process.

The 2010s is remembered for its hyper-focus on modifying the American social construct and its expectations for race- which were fueled by the Black Lives Matter organization, which reached the height of its popularity in the summer of 2020. This organization rose to fame when lots of attention was put towards racial equality. This attention was specifically directed at the problems with law enforcement. Americans expected change and improvements to come from the riots and marches that were held. Through BLM, American's racial expectations were developed, permanently changing the outlook of the decade.

An End to the War on Terror

In August 30th 2010, President Barrack Obama declared the end to U.S. involvement in the War of Terrorism. This war was in response to a series of attacks from al Qaeda and was fought by the U.S. and its allies. This major event marked a new time for Americans, whose lives no longer had to be marked by fear and terrorism. Obama's decision to pull out of the war was beneficial because many American families no longer had to be separated, the U.S. was able to put more money into funding the direct needs of the American people yielding a stronger economy, and it also led to the development of Homeland Security, the passing of the PATRIOT Act, and greatly decreased the threat of terrorism in America.

Perhaps one of the most significant events of the decade was the pandemic of COVID-19. This virus was first discovered in Wuhan, China in December 2019. As the mysterious virus spread throughout the world, countries realized the threat was large enough to require governmental action. The COVID virus then became the prime obsession of the world. Like never seen before in history, the world closed down as countries quarantined and took substantial measures to avoid contraction of the virus. This negatively affected every area of life, from work to school, to economies and individuals´ private lives and rights.

A Historic Peace Agreement

On October 23rd, 2020 a historic peace treaty was made between two countries that have been at odds for years, Sudan and Israel; and it was instigated by President Donald Trump. Not only is this treaty important for the peace and relational improvement of Jews and Muslims, but also for the many countries that are economically tied to Israel. This agreement to harmony is a substantial decision for the newly people-led democracy of Sudan, which was formerly an oppressive Islamic dictatorship. This peace treaty allows for Israel and Sudan to obtain stronger economic relations, along with agricultural, migratory and aviation compromises. Additionally, this has allowed the United States ¨to rebuild trust with our regional partners and identify their shared interests, moving them away from the conflicts of the past" (Trump). Through Donald Trump, the Middle East, United States, Sudan and Israel have been able to positively develop their relationships and advance the world´s political future.

The Fall of Venezuela

March 5th, 2013
After a moment of prosperity under President Hugo Chávez, Nicolás Maduro became the president of Venezuela on March 5th, 2013, marking the beginning of the downfall of Venezuela. After taking office, political corruption started as Maduro stacked government positions with people who were faithful to him, shot government spending through the roof, and arrested anyone who rebelled against his brutality. Under Maduro, Venezuela saw an economic downward spiral, drastic increases in violence, and the highest inflation rate in the Americas at 63%. Due to food and medicine shortages, over three million Venezuelans left the country. The rest of the world witnessed this serious downfall for Venezuela and many countries tried to send humanitarian aid, including the U.S., although many of these efforts were blocked by Maduro.

The Russia-Ukraine Conflict

In March, 2014 the Russia-Ukraine conflict started when the Russian military took over Ukraine's Crimean peninsula. Russia did this for port access to the Black Sea and because they were unwilling to lose its important natural gas transactions. All the way until 2018, many soldiers and people died from this conflict over trading rights. The EU and the United States both got involved in this conflict, attempting to come to an agreement by creating economic sanctions against Russia. This was an attempt to make Russia give up on Ukraine, but it only sent Russia into an economic depression. To this day there are still hard feelings between the U.S. and Russia, and Ukraine and Russia that have not been resolved.

The North Korean Threat

In 2017, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, bragged about his new ballistic missiles and his intention of launching them into the United States. The legitimacy of this threat scared the American public, the U.S. government, and its allies. This technology was especially concerning because there had never been an over-seas threat to the U.S. homeland like this one. Mr. Kim and President Trump exchanged many insulting words, but in order to eliminate the attack on the U.S., Trump decided to do something surprising and unheard of. In March of 2018, Mr. Kim agreed to meet with President Trump to discuss dismantling their weapons program. They made a deal and began a friendly relationship. President Trump was able to make a peaceful agreement with North Korea, a surprising and invaluable thing that protected many lives and brought peace to many minds.

The Paris Climate Accord

In 2015, the United States, along with 195 countries met in Paris, France in order to discuss the issue of climate change. After many weeks of discussion, the Paris Climate Accord was developed, a commitment from nearly every country to reduce their greenhouse gases. This agreement was important because it bound many countries to an important cause that they were all able to enforce for a greater good. It also provided countries with support from each other- financially and technologically. Although, many felt that there were issues in this document that were too important to be ignored. The Paris Climate accord's accomplishments were: an increase in low-carbon solutions, new markets, and more zero-carbon solutions. Through this agreement, global greenhouse gas emissions are expected to drop significantly in years to come.
