Part 1, B: “Even as a little boy he had resented his father's failure and weakness, and even now he still remembered how he had suffered when a playmate had told him that his father was agbala. That was how Okonkwo first came to know that agbala was not only another name for a woman, it could also mean a man who had taken no title. And so Okonkwo was ruled by one passion – to hate everything that his father Unoka had loved. One of those things was gentleness and another was idleness (p. 13).

1. At this point in the novel the readers are finding out more about Okonkwo and how he is well known throughout the nine villages as one of greatest men of his time. We also gain more insight into Unoka, Okonkwo's father who died ten years ago. Unoka was considered a failure because he was lazy, owed a lot of people money and could barely get any food and had received no title by the time he had died. Unoka also hated wars, blood and violence, which was the opposite of Okonkwo.
2. This quote conveys the theme of masculinity and gender because so far in the novel we can see that women/femininity are looked down upon by the men in their villages, they use the term "agbala" (meaning woman) as an insult. Okonkwo thrived to be the opposite of his father, he wanted to be masculine, strong, violent and have power over others. If a man has feminine qualities in the villages they are viewed as weak or as a women. Okonkwo wanted to be masculine in many ways, he viewed masculinity as not showing any emotions other than anger, being violent, owning farms, having many wives, holding power over others, controlling other people and therefore being a "man of action." Masculinity and gender has a huge role in the daily lives in the novel of "Things Fall Apart"

Unoka was telling this quote to his son, Okonkwo. He was essentially telling him to stay strong, regardless to if he doesn't prosper, and to not let failure get in the way.

This quote conveys the theme of pride because Okonkwo's father, Unoka, is asking Okonkwo not to be prideful. He states that if he were to survive a typical failure, such as the harvest, it would mean his ego as a person would not be affected by such defeats. Therefore, Okonkwo should be manly, brave, and not fail personally. If he were to fail alone, it would become bitter and painful for him to keep on with his life.

The man who is saying this quote is an elder from Okonkwo's umunna. This elder is speaking to a group of young men and tells of his concerns regarding the obsolescence of Igbo traditions and the conclusion of cultural and family bonds.

This quote conveys the theme of tradition because it is important for the young adults to be aware and sustain the traditions that are held within their community. It becomes very difficult to pass on traditions and knowledge from one generation to another. Therefore, old people, like this elder in the quote, feel the need to inform these young people about what has been happening for generations, and to not let it come to an end. They believe these children are under a threat to be plunged by modern traditions, which could lead them to discontinue and forget about the past traditions.

Part 1, E: “Okonkwo never showed any emotion openly, unless it be the emotion of anger. To show affection was a sign of weakness; the only thing worth demonstrating was strength” (p. 28).

1. At this point in the story Okonkwo had been chosen by the nine villages to take care of Ikemefuna for a while, he was a boy from another village. Ikemefuna was very scared at first but after a while he became a part of Okonkwo's family. Okonkwo even began to like Ikemefuna but he could not express his affection.
2. This quote conveys the theme of Masculinity/gender because although Okonkwo began to grow fond of Ikemefuna, he could not express his affection to his "son" because he did not want to be viewed as a woman, or weak. If masculinity and gender did not play such a huge role in the nine villages, maybe then Okonkwo wouldn't be so angry, abusive, violent, and would be more affectionate to his wives and kids. I think that Okonkwo had an extreme idea of masculinity in comparison to the other men in the village due to his fear of being weak and like his father. Other men in the village of Umuofia also thrived to be masculine and have power, but they were not as violent or abusive as Okonkwo.
