3-ESS- 1.1 Students who demonstrate understanding can: Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season

Ex. "What was the weather like when you came to school today?"

Visual- Showing a weather graph of the weather for the week or year

Activity- "You will walk around the room and look at the different graphs at each station and answer the questions of "what weather is shown on this graph" "What was the weather like on Monday" "

Stations- Temperatures of this week, rainfall for each month, wind speeds during different times of the year

While going around the classroom during the stations and helping students with the graphs and what they mean

Ex. See how during the spring time it rains quite a bit more than the summer

Ex. "Now that you all have a better understanding of how to reach weather graphs, what do you think we could use these graphs to decide what to wear based on the weather?"

Relections: ex "Can someone tell me what this graph shows about the weather and what you learned from it"

Activity- I will give them a simple graph with weather data for a week and ask, "What would you wear on Monday if you saw this graph?"

They will have a few simple questions to answer on the paper they receive.

Prompt- "What's your favorite season? Why do you like it?"

Discussion- "What is the weather like during that season? Is it hot, cold, rainy, or sunny?"

• Activity- "We have weather charts for each season at the front of the classroom and each of you has a part that fits into one of the seasons (Rain, Snow, Temperature) Your job is to place it on the season chart you think it matches with"

  
  

• "Each season has different weather. Winter is usually cold, and sometimes it snows. During the summer it's hot, and during the spring the weather is cooler, and it rains quite often. Then, in the fall, it starts to get colder, and the leaves start to change colors"

• Activity- I will hand out Venn diagrams and the student will use the knowledge we just gained to compare the seasons by putting similarities in the overlapping part and differences in the outer circles

• EX. “Now that you’ve sorted the weather charts, let’s use a Venn diagram to compare two seasons. What’s the same about Spring and Fall? What’s different about Summer and Winter?”

Reflections discussion- "Can you tell me one thing that the same and one thing that's different about winter and summer?"

• Prompt: “Have you ever looked at a weather app to check the temperature or if it’s going to rain? How do you think scientists or meteorologists keep track of all that information?”

• Discussion: “Today, we’re going to collect our own weather data, just like they do!”

Activity: “We’ll use a weather app to check the temperature, precipitation, and wind for each day this week. You’ll write this information down on a data table. This will help you organize all the weather details clearly!”

Instructions- I will show the students how to find the information in the weather app and guide them on where to put the information in the tables I provided them with

Example: “If we look at the temperature over the week, we can see which days were the warmest or the coolest. What do you think we could learn by comparing the precipitation?”

“Now that we have our data, what can we learn? Can we predict which days might be rainy based on the data? Or, if we look at the temperature, which day is going to be the warmest?”

Graphing Activity: “Let’s turn our table into a graph! Use the information you recorded to create a bar graph for temperature or a line graph for wind. What do you notice when you look at the graph?
