In 2016 it was necessary to change the outdated standards for students. ISTE created 5 new and updated standards in order to create a better learning environment for the new age of technology. Consisting of things like; Empowered students are ready for the future; Human life is no longer solely digital or physical — it’s a hybrid; It's about teaching, not the tools used; Being a global citizen is no longer an option; And students care about their lives and learning, and the role of technology within both.

In 2017, ISTE focused there main points of crucial points that help develop learners. The 5 points were student motivation, social-emotional engagement, self-direction, constructive use of that feedback and digital fluency. Student motivation allows students to go above and beyond. Social-emotional engagement allows for students to engage between technology and peers. Self-direction lies on the students belief in their intelligence through hard work, creating a growth mindset. Constructive use of feedback helps teachers learn what students need help on, letting students almost be in charge. Digital fluency is lets students go through technology safely and effectively.

In 1996 there were three main goals for educational technology which were to provide technology training for teachers, effective educational software, and the most important one which is getting computers in the classroom. At this time technology was new and many people didn’t fully understand how to use it much less use it in a classroom which made training for teachers essential. Having effective educational software was essential to having technology in the classroom. Teachers needed technology in the classroom to be engaging, educational, and simple enough that any student can understand it quickly. By putting computers in the classroom, we can hope for an improved learning experience and something more valuable we can expose them to the coming future dominated by technology.

3 ways to support an effective digital learning environment (Reading)

In 2024, ISTE shifted their focus from helping develop learners to supportive environments that use technology. The 3 things that they focused on were that their were no need for rote learning, shifting to higher-order thinking and empower learners by letting them choose their edtech tools. For the no need for rote learning they talk about they want students to shift from students trying to memorize to students using content to meet higher-order goals. This means students will be allowed to learn more content from using it. For shifting to higher-order thinking there are 3 steps that go into this. Letting students determine when and how to use digital tools to support their learning, ask open-ended questions to foster exploration and discovery, and give learners time to practice higher-order learning skills. From these steps students will be in a more effective learning environment. Then finally empowering learners by letting them choose their edtech tools lets students find sources and tools to help their learning. Creating that confidence in students to find things that will help them positively.

From 1996 to 2004 there has been great technological progress in the world and the goals behind educational technology this year were made with continuing this forward momentum in mind. The main goals of 2004 were to continue the training of teachers in the use of technology in the classroom, improving the tech literacy skills of the students, and furthering the research of educational technology. The training of teachers has almost become a necessity in any year as technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented rate. Along with the teachers the students needed a better understanding of computers and other technology as they were becoming increasingly complicated. Furthering the research of technology became more important as the results of the past years have shown growth in the students learning making it even more important to continue advancing for later generations.

The main goals of educational technology in 2004 were to continue the improved technology literacy skills of students, promoting education for all, as well as a more personalized and adaptive learning environment. Helping the students literacy is crucial as we welk further into a technology driven society. Promoting education for all students is extremely important now more than ever because a student who fell behind before technology came around could still catch up but todays technology makes this more difficult. With a more personalized learning environment students can feel more safe and heard while learning leading to a much better learning experience.
