Spring Math Fun – Ladybug Number Match

As part of our spring-themed activities and our exploration of insects, we created a fun hands-on game to help children recognize and match numbers from 1 to 10.

Each child was given a number card (from 1 to 10) and had to find and combine the two halves of a ladybug that had the corresponding number of black dots on its wings. The ladybugs were cut in half, and each wing had a certain number of dots. The children had to count the dots, find the correct halves, and place the completed ladybug on the matching number card.

This activity supported:

Number recognition and counting up to 10

Visual discrimination and matching skills

Fine motor development through handling and positioning the pieces

Cooperation and communication among peers

The children were excited to play and learn with their little ladybug friends!

Each student transforms into a little bunny, starting from a number and taking steps toward 10, where Floppy—the bunny gifted by the 6th Primary School—rests. With every step, the bunny leaves a carrot until it reaches 10, where it stops to rest.

At this point, the child calculates how many carrots they still hold and continues adding. For example:

• If the bunny starts at 8 and has 5 carrots:

  • It will move 2 steps to reach 10, leaving 2 carrots.

  • At 10, it calculates that 3 carrots remain.

  • The bunny continues, leaving the remaining 3 carrots, reaching 13.

  • Therefore: 8 + 5 = 13.

This game was designed by the teacher of the integration class and implemented in collaboration with the first-grade teacher to reinforce the understanding of addition and subtraction, making learning fun and interactive.

But the most important thing was… we had an amazing time!

The 6th-grade class has built its own store, and now it's time for the big visit! The shopkeepers have their products ready, the customers hold their shopping lists in their hands, and the adventure begins!

Customers browse the shop, select products, and calculate the total cost of their purchases. But just when they are ready to pay, a surprise awaits them…

“Today we have a DISCOUNT!” announces an enthusiastic shopkeeper.

Now, the customers must calculate the discount percentage before completing their transaction. How much less will they pay? How does this affect the total value of their purchases?

With the support of students from the Inclusion Department, the activity becomes even more dynamic! Together, they explain, calculate, reflect, and discover the importance of percentages in everyday life.

The number game continues, the joy of learning is everywhere, and everyone leaves with new knowledge and—of course—with the best deals of the day!

Objectives:

Operations with decimals: Students apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations, practicing accuracy in their calculations.

Economic reasoning: Understanding the connection between numbers and real transactions, providing students with a hands-on mathematical experience. ✔

Practicing percentages: Calculating discounts, adjusting prices, and understanding the relationship between original and final values—skills with real-life applications.

Social interaction: Cooperation, communication, and boosting mathematical confidence as students take on roles and engage in calculations.

Classroom inclusion: All students actively participate, discovering the power of collaboration and strengthening their learning skills through play.
