Ultimately, it allows for more time to breed and promotion of courtship and mating behaviors.

According to Merck Vet Manual, mares can have several issues with breeding behaviors, one of which is called "silent heat". This means that the mare's reproductive tract appears to be healthy and fertile; however, upon breeding, the mare will not accept the stallion to be bred. This can be common in young mares, who are entering their first estrous cycle. Some factors that may play a role in silent heat include environment and preference of mates.
