The topic for this weeks assignment is "strangeness" and that's what we get in this round of short stories. Strangeness is a very broad topic, and many different things can be labeled as "strange". I will be looking at characters in "Delhi" by Vandana Singh and "Ice Man" by Haruki Murakami.

Aseem is a very interesting character who has a very interesting gift. Walking around his home town and he is able to catch glimpses of the past and future. He meets ancient kings and see's the future landscape of the town he calls home. "He sees more apparition's in the older parts of the city than anywhere else..." There are no warnings as to when he will have his visions, and at times he isn't sure whether the people he meets are from his time or another.

Narrator

We don't get a name from Haruki Murakami in his short story "Ice Man", instead we get a first hand account from someone who has married an "ice man" and how her life slowly gets more and more lonely. We are never given a clear definition of what an "ice man" is, yet the narrator is married to one and in time becomes pregnant with a little "ice man". "My Husband's an Ice man" is literally the first line of the story, and it is the authors bluntness on the strange that makes it even more strange.

Om Prakash

Although Aseem is the main character, through him we come across Om Prakash. Om Prakash doesn't do anything particularly strange, he just gives off a strange vibe. He claims to work for Pandit Vidyanath, but we never meet this person. He works in giving people's lives meaning through a computer. One line that stuck out to me was "A bee crawls out of his ear..." A very odd sentence to randomly throw in, and gives off an eerie feeling, adding to the strangeness off his profession.

What makes "Strange"

A reoccurring theme in these two stories is the bluntness of the authors towards these weird occurrences. If they spent more time dwelling on how strange a strange things is, it loses its strangeness. Instead we hear about an Ice Man or meeting people from the past or future and it is brushed off as no big deal. That is what makes these stories so strange, less the strange things that happen and more the reaction to it.
