In “The Story of an Hour” the author introduces the characters, atmosphere, and setting all within the first two paragraphs. We learn that our main character, Mrs. Mallard's has heart problems and is currently at her home. Her sister, Josephine, is trying to break the news of her husband death, Brently Mallard, gently so not to arise any problems with her heart. We also learn that it was Richard who works for the newspaper, received a list of people killed in a railroad accident. This creates an atmosphere of caution and mourning in the house of a woman who just learned of her husband's death and could possibly die from this news.

Conflict is the main problem presented in which the characters must work towards solving. A conflict that can be presented as either internal or external this means its either: man vs man, man vs. self, man vs. nature, and man vs. fate. In fiction a conflict drives the story forward in keeping the reader interested and to have a main goal.

In this instance we see our main character struggle through conflict of man vs. self, meaning she is struggling with internal conflict. The problem is presented after Mrs. Mallard’s husbands death is announced. Throughout the story she is trying to accept the way she feel about her husband's death. Her fear of her relief in this news and is unsettling because in that time frame it wasn’t a normal reaction. The main objective Mrs. Mallard is trying to solve is: accepting how she feels.

After finding out that the main character is having problems realizing what she feels toward her husband’s death we then grown into the raising action. In the raising action we see her confliction with the acception of what she is feeling. The suspense is like walking with our character shoes not knowing where it’ll end or if it’ll even be solved. In “The Story of an Hour” the suspense is created through Mrs. Mallard going back and forth on accepting her feelings toward the death.

Through this process is the author makes the character come alive in what she/he does, says, thinks, and others say about them.

The author uses her thoughts to help us develop how we see the character. We also get to see how her reaction to the news is different from those around her and travel through her thought process. All these things help us develop an idea of who Mrs. Mallard is

In “The Story of an Hour” the character foil can be seen Josephine and the main character Mrs. Mallard. The first indication that we can see difference between these two characters is their reaction to the news of the death. Josephine was mournful and knew that if it were her husband she would have weeped and been lost. When Joshine broke the news of the death she did it gently and “in broken sentences: veiled hints that revealed in half concealing” (Foresman, 450). She assumed that Mrs. Mallard’s would be the same as she would have and in assuming this she was wrong because Mrs. Mallard did the complete opposite. Later when she locked herself in her room Josephine yelled, “Louise open the door! I beg you, open the door - you will make yourself sick (Foresman, 452).” This shows again how they had two completely different ways of reacting, Mrs. Mallard wasn’t crying or dreadfully mourning, she was relieved and thought only of possibilities.
