This is il Duomo, the dome of the Church of Santa Maria del Fiore. The cathedral lacked a dome for decades, but Filippo Brunelleschi figured a way to build this massive dome out of iron hoops, wood and brick. It has no internal supports.

The Palazzo Medici was a thriving center of art, the painters were influenced by the classical culture and the spread of humanism. Mostly the painters wanted a realistic setting and a new style of painting. The Medici Family had spent huge amounts of money on paintings, statues, and fine palaces.

Renaissance sculptors were also influenced by the interest of realism, it also inspired them to carve figures to make them look like real people. Donatello's David was so natural it was almost impossible to make. The statue is a good example of his life and how he was a young warrior in the Bible story of David.

Dante Alighieri wrote his best known words in Italian and not Latin, the long poem that he wrote describes his imaginary journey of his afterlife. An ancient Roman poet Virgil describes him as his guide where Dante witnesses the torments of souls condemned to the Inferno. Dante's work became a model for the other Renaissance writers as Petrarch and Boccaccio.

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the most creative Renaissance thinkers and was an artist, scientist,engineer and inventor who studied artists and did his early work there. Leonardo would make sketches with amazing topics like geometry, engineering,architecture. One of his painting all the one I have listed.

The local government was housed in the Palazzo Vecchio which also means old palace, the powerful Medici family controlled by Florence for almost three centuries. A way that the Medici maintained their power was their vast wealth and they built palaces and had a very strong army.

One of the reasons why Florence became a cultural center was because of trade and commerce. There were two markets in Florence Mercato Vecchio which meant Old Market and The Mercato Nuovo . As you see in the photo I have chosen the Old Market which is Mercato Vecchio something you could get is some food but it was mostly crowded because people all over Europe would come and buy or sell goods. In Mercato Nuovo you could get cloth and banking industries, city officials band food and weapons because they wanted it to be clean.
