Its magnitude was of 9.1 that provoked a tsunami.
It affected 30km below the surface and 160km off the western coast of norhtern Sumatra. The cause of the earthquake was that the Burma plate subducted below the Indian plate. In some places of the plate, 1200km suddenly moved. 
It was equivalent to 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs.

When the water gets near the costline, the wave started to build up to 15m and in some areas up to 30m.
The tsunami was about 2 km inland in some areas. The reason was because much part of the coast was very low-lying. 
It had sufficient energy to affect also Africa that is located 5000km far.
