Online Instructors for Primary K-3 Virtual School is the focal audience for this toolkit. However many of the tools are of interest and use to administrators, online instructors of higher grade levels and those teaching in higher education, especially teacher colleges preparing preservice teachers for the 21st century classroom. Also, teachers in traditional settings will find these tools useful for managing hybrid courses and technology integration into their classroom. For those teachers who are strictly working in an online environment, each tool is selected to support this virtual classroom experience.

The Two Categories

I have included two primary categories that virtual teachers will need for communicating curriculum and instruction to the learners. Virtual Teachers prepare lessons to be accessed from multiple digital devices.
The first category is Instructor Use Presentation Apps for PCs or Tablets. These are interactive presentation tools that the teacher will use to format content and receive student responses. Some examples include https://www.join.me/, https://www.mikogo.com/ Screen Sharing, and https://zoom.us/ Video Conferencing, Webinars. For the virtual teacher, it is important to have multiple ways to engage students both synchronously and asynchronously. The students need to receive communications from the teacher that includes instructional content, directions of how to do tasks, and feedback to questions and performances students have submitted. Digital tools that allow teachers to share content in multimedia formats which include images and voice-overs are important because according to the multimedia principle, students learn better when auditory information is presented with related images. (Mayer, 2009).Students working on interactive technology applications to accomplish academic tasks. Virtual teaching is 100% technology-dependent and the tools and applications need to involve as much of human forms of communication as possible, so I include multimedia tools that include video conversations so the human voice and visual video of the human face and body can be included so the gestures can be part of the communication process. These multimedia tools allow for a great rapport to be established between the virtual teacher and the virtual learner.

The second category is Interactive Applications to Support 21st Century Primary Literacies including Reading, Writing and Digital communications. Digital tools should be interactive so the learning experience can transcend the passive learning mode of consuming connect as in most Web 1.0 application of the earlier Digital Age software. The more students can manipulate and create content the deeper their learning experience will be along with greater transfer value to other content areas. Interactive tools support critical and creative thinking and give an opportunity for the learner to innovate solutions outside the closed system passive learning models. Interactive tools also can provide immediate feedback a novice learner needs at the early stages of skill development, such as in the touch typing skills or letter formation skills. Virtual teachers can provide students with additional meaningful practice through interactive websites and tools that allow students needing extra practice to work independently and receive feedback and reinforcement during self-directed learning activities. These interactive tools are supplemental and should not be used to replace instruction and guided practice.
Some examples include:
Digital Input Skills

http://keyseeker.parkfieldprimary.com/ locate key on keyboard
Reading Skills
graphix.com/interactive_worksheets/Pink_WS_BOJ_final-US2.php

Writing Skills
http://www.storyit.com/Starters/stgetaway.htm

It has sections devoted to teachers, parents and children. Researched based best practices for literacy education and professional development are presented in this site. This site is funded by a national multimedia literacy initiative and also contributes to the PBS series for children by the same name. One feature I find very useful is the section on how to teach reading literacy. There are many excellent videos and articles to help teachers learn the best practices for helping children succeed at reading. In addition, it is loaded with lessons and classroom activities to encourage a lifelong joy of reading (Reading Rockets, 2001).

Scholastic is an excellent site for students to drill and practice reading skills.

VoiceThread is a great Interactive App that allows for multimedia combinations of sound, static images, slides, video uploads, and voice or text comments on each slide. The commenter can use markers to mark up the slide to bring attention to the important feature of ideas in that slide. I demonstrated my ability with VoiceThread in my Case Study Technology Story about doing Online Collaboration. I embedded my PowToon video and included screenshots of various online pages where the online collaboration was done. For both audiences (educators and students) I would demonstrate the methods for uploading material, all the varieties and demonstrate the text and voice methods for leaving comments. I would demonstrate the ways teachers for various age groups are using and how well it supports collaborative learning and asynchronous communication. Because comments can be left with text, voice and video, there is great potential for human communication to include word meaning that comes through voice inflections and body and facial gestures. I would use the video commenting feature to help build up my rapport with the students and let them get to know me better as a human person by letting them see me and hear me in my feedback responses. I also believe the voice and video options provides a user friendly way for young children to share their thoughts as they have more they want to say than their writing skills allow.
I created a Primary Summative Assessment to use following a "Fiction or Nonfiction" general unit using VoiceThread. I believe it will be easier for students to state their answers with the microphone input option versus typing in answers due to their limited typing and writing skills. Through VoiceThread I can learn more of what the students are thinking as they process the learning tasks.
Also VoiceThread is a great way to create classroom projects to share on the classroom webpage. Those with the link can be given the option to make comments. In this way students can receive real world feedback from other people the class has connected to in the community such as experts, civic leaders and fine artists. One class had a visit from a children's literature author and they used VoiceThread to send her a collaborative thankyou card. The students were thrilled that the author left a comment for the class on the thread they sent her.

To introduce VoiceThread to teachers I would use a video similar to the one produced by Penn State University.
Published on Mar 11, 2015

This video introduces VoiceThread, the online video collaboration tool that is being used by Penn State.
