🌊 The Tale of Bū Daryā – The Lord of the Sea Long ago, before oil and skyscrapers, Qatari life depended on the sea. Fishermen and pearl divers spent months on the water, sailing in wooden dhows. But along with fish, pearls, and trade, the sea also held dangers. The most feared of all was Bū Daryā — the Father of the Sea. He was said to be half-man and half-fish, with glowing eyes and a terrifying cry. Sailors believed he could climb aboard ships in the night, drag men into the deep, or smash a vessel into splinters. One night, a dhow’s crew anchored to rest. The sea was calm. Suddenly, from the dark waves came a voice — crying like a lost passenger: "Help me! Help me! A man is drowning!" The youngest sailor rushed to untie a rope, but the captain shouted: "Stay where you are! That’s no man — it’s Bū Daryā tricking us!" The sailors huddled together, reciting verses from the Qur’an for protection. Still, the voice grew louder, closer, and more desperate. Finally, the captain gave an order: "Seize the saws and adzes! If he climbs aboard, strike the deck to scare him away!" The crew banged their tools against the wooden planks until sparks flew. The sound echoed across the waves. For a moment, the sea fell silent. Then came an awful scream — and with a great splash, Bū Daryā vanished beneath the waves. From that night on, sailors kept strict night watches. If they heard cries on the water, they remembered the captain’s wisdom: not every cry is what it seems.
