Conor has nightmares, but one night he actually sees a monster form from a yew tree. He puts it off as a dream though, although there were many yew tree leave scattered around his room in the morning. His father is somewhere on a business trip, and his step mother has cancer. His stepmother told him his grandma is coming because she needs help with her treatments, but Conor doesn't like his grandmother.

Conor's mother is sick, so people are making fun of him at school for it. When he was being bullied, lily defended him, but ended up getting in trouble because conor lied, and he hates lily b/c she was the one who told everyone about him mom. Conor's grandmother came to help with his mother, and she talks about him living with her after his mother dies, but he gets mad and refuses. Later that night, the monster shows up, and begins to tell conor the first story.

Conor has had a tough life, with his father leaving, his mother being sick, his grandmother, and the bullies at school. All of these life experiences caused him to be tougher, and learn how to take care of himself. That might be why Conor is not afraid of the Monster, because he's seen scarier and worse things in his life, and why he doesn't have as much sympathy for Lily when he gets her in trouble.

I think the monster is guiding Conor by using the stories, because they all resemble something that he does in his life, and he/she is making Conor think about his actions. I think the monster wants to help Conor because it doesn't want what happened in the past to happen again, so he's trying to prevent Conor from doing that. The stories he tells reflect the way Conor feels and acts in his life.

I think the grandma acted that way to the mess Conor made was because she was already under so much stress, and was in pain because she knew what was happening to Conor's mother, and so when she saw the mess, I think she just let it all out. I think she was also a little relieved because she was about it being perfect and tidy all the time and acting like everything was okay. That's why I think she destroyed the last thing that wasn't broken in the room, because she saw everything else was destroyed anyways, and it let her take out her pain on it.

The first tale is about a queen who was framed for murder, when she actually wasn't as bad as people think she is. Conor was doing the same thing to his grand mother, he thought she was the worst person ever and he wanted her to go away, but she really wasn't that bad. In the second story, it's about someone being nice to the Apothecary, only when he needed his daughters healed. This is like Conor, who is only nice to the yew tree when he is begging it to heal his mother. Then in the very last tale, it's about an invisible man, who is tired of not being seen, and makes people see. This happens to Conor, when he is tired of being ignored, so he make people pay attention to him by getting mad and then beating up Harry. All of these stories really happen to Conor, but in it's own way.

So there was an invisible man, and he was tired of not being seen by people, so he called a monster. That monster was the same monster that Conor called. The monster helped Conor and he beat up Harry so Conor be seen by people, just like he did the invisible man.

I feel like the movie doesn't explain whats going on really. If you haven't read the book, I don't think you would really be able to understand what is going on. Also, I wish the movie included Lily, because I feel like she plays a big role, defending conor, and giving him that note when he felt alone the most. But overall, the movie is really good so far.

If I could revise this, I would put Lily in the movie, because she played such an important part in the story. She is the one who told everyone about Conor's mom being sick. If it weren't for her, Conor wouldn't be bullied, and wouldn't have such a hard time at school. I don't really know why they didn't put lily in the film as well, because she kind of supports Conor, even if he doesn't want her to.
