With my glass jar, I filled it with wrappers from my food and snacks I had throughout the week such as sandwich bags and ice cream wrappers so I could visualize what kind of materials I was sending to the landfills in my week. Every year, about 2.3 million tons of trash are sent to landfills. If I were to cut down my packaged food I think that I could make a significant difference. I don’t know how well I can execute this but I think that with baby steps it can be done.
https://www.learner.org/exhibits/garbage/solidwaste.html

I picked a small jam jar. The idea came to me that it might be the right size to travel with. I am constantly buying new travel size containers to take my hair products on trips. I thought I would use my jar for my conditioner or moisturizer. Plastic takes approximately 450 YEARS to decompose. By doing this I will be saving approx. 4 bottles of plastic a year.

When I would go out to eat to places like Panda Express I would ask them if they could put my food in my jar instead of using their plastic packaging. The people at Panda thought I was weird for asking but besides that I felt good knowing I used something reusable. I also used my own fork instead of their plastic ones. Finally when at home or on the go I tried grabbing the jar and filling it up with water.

Every day I bring my lunch to work in a plastic bag and in that plastic bag are plastic zip lock bags holding various snacks that will get thrown away when I eat my lunch. This is obviously using a lot of plastic an creating an abundance of waste. replacing the zip lock bags with the jar eliminates about five bags a week as well as using a reusable sack to carry my lunch in greatly reduced my plastic usage. Over the course of a year that is almost 260 zip lock bags that would not end up in a landfill

-Dakota Pettingill

Plastic Water Bottles are Bad

My ecofriendly idea was to use this glass jar for drinking water. This idea is simple that many people probably used, but it is important for me and for the earth. I used this glass jar for a week, by drinking water out of it. This is very important, because I usually drink water out of plastic water bottles, which is not good. Drinking water from a glass jar instead of plastic, helps the earth a ton. Plastic is packing-related material, and this makes up more than 30 percent of landfill waste on earth. I had another example from a website I found on this, “75 million tons of waste each year”. These statistics are scary, and true. We all can help the earth even in the smallest ways. I will continue to drink out of a glass jar instead of a plastic water bottle, because of how much packaged material hurts the earth, this is plastic and many other things as well. I am glad I am helping the earth better than I was, but we all must be aware of plastic or packaged material, because this hurts the earth. We all can make a difference.

Obviously, I use Ziploc to packed sandwiches and even apple and other fruits for my lunch and so as I go on hike some times and everyday use. But when taking this class, I learn that using of plastic related product is not ecofriendly for our surrounding environment. And since I got the glass jar, I learn that it is more ecofriendly than plastic related products. So, since I got the glass jar, I have tried numerous times packing fruits and biscuits, I packed them and taken to school for my lunch and I see that it works very well.
On the one hand, I see that using glass jar over and over is is very good, also for save more money on our expense on such things as Ziploc/k. So I recommenced that using glass jar is very beneficial for both the environment and reducing our expense on some other unwanted items.

Actually, I always use a lot of glass jars to save some stuff instead of ziplock and something else. I used to use ziplock when I packed some stuff especially foods. However, I realized that it costs me a lot to buy a ziplock and I must waste many plastic materials. It means that I had two drawbacks; waste from the aspects of money and resource. Therefore, I started to use a glass jar for every foods. As a result, it does allow me to reuse these glass jars foe everything.

Mikiya Inoue

I used my glass jar for a week to drink water out of it. Instead of buying a drink in a plastic bottle I used my jar instead. During that week I help the environment out even though it was a little bit, but I did cut down my plastic use.

I found out some interesting facts that I want to share with you guys about plastic. We use about 50% of plastic once and then throw it away. Over the last ten years, we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the previous century. Then you have 46% of plastics float (EPA 2006), and it can drift for years before eventually concentrating in the ocean gyres. These are a few out of 22 facts to help show that our overuse of plastic hurts the environment.

Now, we know from class and our research how harmful plastic is to our body. But did you know that plastic is leaking toxins into the ocean which had entered the food-chain? We know that the plastic in the ocean is killing and hurting some of the species living there. When we eat fish, for example, that fish might be contaminated from the toxins in the ocean from the leaking plastic.

This shows us that plastic can affect us and the environment verse a glass container that doesn't harm us and is reusable.
Shyann Drobnick

Sources

https://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/health/case_studies/plastics.html

https://www.ecowatch.com/22-facts-about-plastic-pollution-and-10-things-we-can-do-about-it-1881885971.html

With my glass jar, instead of keeping the fruits and vegetables that I used to make my lunches for the week in their plastic bags from the store, I bought the products with my own bags and kept them in a glass jar in the fridge (the picture is the jar I used to keep the chick peas). This helped the Earth because instead of getting plastic bags to throw away that will stay in the environment, I used a reusable container. The making of new glass containers uses 40% more energy than making recycled ones, which is what I used.

Caleb Cole

https://www.usgbc.org/articles/why-glass-better-plastic

For a week, I decided to use my glass jar for drinking water. Initially, I thought that I didn't use plastic bottles that much, however, I was wrong. I took the jar everywhere with me, including places like the gym and work. I realized how much I actually used plastic bottles and that frightened me. At the end of my week, I felt accomplished and ready for more changes. Getting rid of plastic bottles from my life was something that I had wanted to do for a long time, I just never had the motivation. After doing research, I also learned that bottles are not only bad for the environment, but for the human body as well. In addition to that shocker, I also learned that about 25% of bottled water is actually just tap water. That makes me so much more grateful to cut plastic bottles out of my life. I am excited to see how much further I can take this in my life.

Kerra Ridgley

https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-11193/7-reasons-to-never-drink-bottled-water-again.html

What i did with my glass jar.
For one week I used my glass jar for my lunch. I had a salad in the jar and did not buy a pre-made salad from the campus shop or Starbucks. not only did I decrease the plastic that I used I also save quite a bit of money Win all around. I was also unaware that most of the plastic that has been used for food is placed in landfills. here is a link to an article that explains more.

For the whole week, I've been using my glass jar to store honey, lard, and other food products. I believe that this is more resourceful than buying these items in a plastic container, as plastic accounts for a large portion of pollution. Now, I can use my glass jar to purchase bulk items as opposed to purchasing the plastic packaging as well. The jar is reusuable and very durable so I won't have to replace it (unless I break it), which further prevents pollution due to manufacturing.
-LEXI RUTLEDGE
Source: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2018/07/ocean-plastic-pollution-solutions/

I used my glass jar to store my coffee grounds in instead of the plastic bag they arrive in when you buy them at the store. Most grocery stores keep coffee beans in bulk and then a grinder you can use to grind up those beans. I bought them this time in my glass jar and I just paid the extra for the jar. I noticed that the glass jar was easier to keep sealed too, which helped keep my coffee fresher. Coffee is the second largest global commodity in the world with the United States being the 2nd largest importer. There was 174 million bags of coffee produced last year. If people started buying coffee in bulk it could save a big percentage of plastic packaging on coffee. Also with the Keurig movement, consumers are causing more plastic being disposed as it is single use plastic for convenience. One large bag of coffee beans is less plastic then 16 small plastic pods being used. It is also more affordable to buy coffee in bulk than the Keurig pods too.

For a week I decided to start putting my beverages I drink in a glass jar. Almost every day I buy a drink from work, which I work inside Safeway. I usually pick out a vitamin water for my after work beverage choice. I chose this because I use plastic bottles more than anything else I notice. "The production of plastic water bottles requires 17 million barrels of oil each year. This amount of oil has the ability to maintain up to one million cars fueled for an entire year." After looking through this article I didn't realize before how crazy the statistics were. I think even the littlest things to help improve your plastic waste can be useful to not only yourself but to the environment.
http://www.gogreen.org/blog/impacts-of-plastic-water-bottles
-Kourtney Burch
