Today, a war has been taking over the majority of Afghanistan. The two men experienced maximum security and were in dangerous territory. The amount of guns and violence that happened in just clear area made it difficult to ensure safety in the men. Marco Polo hadn't seen the amount of danger that was happening due to terrorists and the government now.  Therefore all the war happening today compared to Marco Polo's time is much different than today.  
Although in Afghanistan, Marco Polo had a tablet that was given to him by ambassadors, giving privilages and rights to let him pass certain issues and activites that might give him trouble along his travels. Similarly, Francis and Dennis has a paper from the Ambassador of Afghanistan, which they used to gain respect from the people. The way they had cut sheep for food and the yurts were still the same as they were when Marco Polo was there. Marco Polo describled the horses, arrows and in his writing. They experienced the same kinds of customs that the Mongols have. 
Difference: When Marco Polo was traveling, the Mongols were also fighting in war and had the largest Empire in Asia, although now Mongolia is a smaller country and not as despurse as the Empire was when Marco Polo had traveled. Although they still have the same customs they are very different amounts of land. At the time, traveling by ship was very common. Although, now traveling by ship isn't very popular, the two men were able to cross the ocean to India by ship. Though they has to pass as crew members, much like Marco Polo did, they went by merchant ship to arrive in India. The men however had to push a lot in order for this to happen, and many ship owners were reclucatant until, after getting pulublicity, one company agreed to let them tag along on their ship, very similarly to how Marco Polo had traveled. 

Difference: Marco Polo had seen the people from India as savages and cannibals. But, from the point of view of Dennis and Francis, do say that the people of India are not savages and do not eat people, as described about Adaman (an island in the Bay of Bengal) in Marco Polo's book. Because of this, their encounters with the people of Andaman were changed from Marco Polo's because of the way people have evolved. This made their travels harder and shows how much has changed from Marco Polo's time. 750 years ago, Marco Polo was able to cross Iran, easier than Francis and Dennis were. The country of Iran back then wasn't as strict as they are now, Marco Polo wasn't required to have visas, be interrogated and stopped from his travels due to the officals, like the two men had trouble with, which differenciated their travels form each other. By the time that they had gotten their visas, they were allowed to stay there for a month, but the amount of work it took to gaint he visas were extreme compared to how Marco Polo would have been able to enter Persia. A similarity though was that, both Marco Polo and the two men made the observation that the climate in Iran was hot, but they both noticed that the people in Iran had created architechure to fix that, such as ventillators. Each also mentioned Assasins Valley, about a myth, of young men who were given drugs and told to kill a person, which is how the valley had gotten its name. Marco Polo would have stayed in hotels that were for merchants, they were midevil the men said. They wanted to make the trip as close to how Marco Polo had traveled as possible. Therefore, they also went to see these old hotels that merchants would have stayed in. They are still standing today after hundreds of years. Turkey, still on the Silk Road was geographically similar to today as well. The men saw Turkey the way the Marco Polo would have. 

Difference: While there are some similarities to Marco Polo's travels and Dennis and Francis', time has also changed and so has Turkey. The busy ports that at the time were as famous as a ports in New York. All of the European ships would enter these ports and the town would be bussling; although, now the town they had visited is a small fishihg town that many isn't a big city like Istanbul. Today, Bukhara has much more achitechure. While in Marco Polo's day, he had descirbled Bukhara differently. The buildings that the two men had seenw weren't there when Marco Polo arrived, because the height of the  Empire was much later. 
Similarity: In the time that the men had gone to Uzbeistan, they had very few travelers and foregniers, but now the government was open to travelers in their country. When Marco Polo was traveling, the country wasn't as closed off as they were 70 years ago either, for it was on the Silk Road. The people were very interested in the men, much like Marco Polo was interested in them and their way of life.  This lesson to Dennis and Francis was one of the more important ones, they had met so many people, and been to so many countries, with opinions on Americans that were terrible, through those opinions they experienced good of the world and the good of people in places all over.
