The creation of CADS is an extremely useful tool and allows me the opportunity to create range plans. If I am to go into the field of buying, this is a key part of the role. It enables me to have some design responsibility, using the trend predictions to direct a brand. Using WGSN's CAD catalogue, I downloaded and played around using Adobe Illustrator to create and colour some products below.

Following different articles and sources on trend forecasting, I explored different runways and street styles that were seen throughout the month of 2021, to develop fashion that I think will be seen in 2022/23.

Here are some trend predictions and the reasons why:

Extreme oversized fits - During the pandemic, loungewear and comfort clothing were key as many stayed at home. The softer/bigger and cosier the better, and so I think as we move outside these silhouettes will continue to follow. They also provide an aspect of safety (see Maslow's hierarchy of needs post)

Playful punk - There is a lot of emphasis on goth vibes (see the article above on NYFW)

Summer in winter - I think that even into the winter months we will hold onto bright/pastel/summer colours. Following the lowness that many experienced during the pandemic, I believe that brands will still incorporate colours that spark joy and positive emotions to combat things like S.A.D.

The impact of the coronavirus severely impacted on brands within and outside of the fashion industry and it is key to think about what life will be like for retail after this, as many brands are still recovering or struggling to do so.

Sabba also touched onto Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which explains the different motivations for human behaviour. These different motivations give really good insight to brands about their consumers, as they are able to gain a better understanding of why their customers want to buy into their products.

For example, customers who need safety may be more likely to buy products for health and wellness purposes, whereas others may invest more in experiences and retreats with loved ones for the love and belonging needs.

She explained that at the Myriad Publishing company, they were more focused on getting the messaging, story and social issues across.

I find that although CADs are an incredibly useful tool for designers, I do prefer looking at hand drawn illustrations of fashion designs, because I feel as though there are more intricacies and you can add more detail that digitally you may not be able to. That being said, this may be possible digitally and I admit that I don't have resources other than my laptop to create CADs with.

Sabba creatively uses her illustrations to highlight social issues and those that may affect her directly. This illustration demonstrates the experience of Muslim university students across the UK. It highlights the stigma and discrimination these students go through, as society's view of Muslims often tends to trickle down into academic institutions.

With clear and calm narration, Sabba perfectly raises simple questions of "why can we not belong?" and challenges viewers to change their perceptions of how they view others.

As a student who doesn't face such hardships in education, it is really insightful and helpful for me to hear the viewpoint and empathise with those who follow Islam.

“Creativity is a political act” This point from the presentation really stuck with me because I have never really associated my work with the ability to make positive change. I think I underestimate the power of a piece of creative work - at times I may think about how my work can generate a nice reaction, but I never think it would be great enough or big enough to affect anything on society.

I think this is really going to stick with me and will definitely change the way in which I think about the work I produce, I am definitely inspired to do more and think bigger with the ways in which my creativity can make a big societal impact.

In 2015, artist Luke Jerram collaborated with the Bristol homeless charity 1625 Independent People to highlight the invisibility of homeless people.

The glass sculpture he created reflected the figure of a sleeping homeless person.

I further researched South Asian famous artists and illustrators. I found this body of work by Amrita Sher-Gil, a mixed-heritage artist who produced the majority of her work in the 1930s. Her paintings had embodied the exoticism of South Asian women, Indian specifically, that were typically admired by a white voyeuristic male gaze.

She managed to capture these women by painting them in a way that highlighted their beauty without it coming from that same gaze.
