Formative assessment tools I use

In my class for formative assessments I use these things:
Observations - I have been likened to a prison warden as I wander around my class after giving my students some task to complete and watch how they carry out this task - or if they even bother to carry it out
Questioning - I will randomly ask the class as a whole to give me definitions of terms we have used in class.
Discussions - I try on many occasions to start classroom discussions as I think this is a great way to garner learners understanding of a certain topic. They may also explain it in a way that other learners might understand better.
Presentations - I have at least one task where they are asked to give a presentation. Although I do find that the learners in my class that are more introverted hate this task and if they know it is coming up will not attend class that day.
Constructive quizzes - I do create quizzes for my learners especially as it gets closer to the actual quiz. This way they get to practice with the system they will use on the quiz day.
Exit Slips - I like this idea and will look to see how I can incorporate it into my class sessions

After showing and giving my students a physical task I continuously observe move through the room checking and giving tips, showing maybe another way they can do it and watching to make sure they understand and can show me they can complete the task. I am always asking questions and sometimes steering them towards the answer. I come back to them and ask the same question in a different way sometimes to gauge the learning. I think quizzing them and asking questions with hands on learning and repeating can help students absorb information. Photographic evidence is used and the student comments on "how and why" with the related photo.
I have signed up to Socrative and love it. Will be using this next lesson. I do like the exit card idea too. It would help me gauge myself too.

In my class as adult students I use group sessions where the class will work as a team, discuss the set questions, practicing them amongst themselves and evaluate how they reached the conclusion to the set question/s. I also use the observation method where I would encourage revision of aspects talked about to be practiced by the students. I would pose questions to those whom I feel are not engaging as well as they can be so as to ascertain if there is anyconcerns that they may have with the topic or structure of study.

The course that we are learning have exercises online that as a class we peruse to enhance our learning. These are similar to what we are learning here with quizes and write in answers to particular questions asked. Essentially it is revision for the lesson that I teach face to face with the students.

Teaching te reo Maori we sing waiata and put actions to various waiata as well. This is great for the physical aspect as well as proper pronunciation of kupu. When himene and karakia are given, there is that spiritual aspect the strengthens within as well.

I really like the Summarising,so as I am talking and doing the task , I get my students to write down what I am doing in their own words 75- 100 then I get them to do it practically hands on a few times .Eventually words then go from paragraphs to sentences then 10 to 15 words that are then used as a map to follow the procedure from.I like the students to write down shortened & words and phrases as I am talking , so that we can refer back to them .I like to give them a client consultation form to work around at creating a session or treatment protocol for the person.I draw diagrams for them to copy and later draw and explain back to each other in a presentation.I like the idea of highlighting 3 main things they could stumble on .I need to get them to engage more with me and ask more questions.Drawing on a white board is a super way to get them to understand in another visual way.

I do create situations where they would need to transfer - and use the knowledge they have but apply it a different way.I do have a check list for them to fill out with what the want to learn more of and and questions– Body language I watch very well , as one takes in a huge amount of info and it is very tiresome for some more than others , this is where I would have a break or get them to draw or drink or taste or experience something related to what they are learning.
Once they learn they need to explain to a model what it is they are doing and why.

I shall Check listening skills by asking questions in future. -Michelle
