Natural selection allows the Finches to survive, by adapting and changing to fit their environment. As the drought occurred, the beak length has increased within the birds to scout out for food that are in their environment and reach. As the Finches with thinner/smaller beaks die out as they cannot sufficiently eat the plants and seeds on the island, those with average and bigger beaks live on and pass down these traits.

This evidence shows us that some seeds and plants has started to change to adapt to their environment during the drought from 1977-1978, as during the drought both populations of seeds decreased but only the population of Tribulus seeds remained after the drought (1979, 4 seeds per square meter) unlike the Portulaca seeds, which none remained. This is important to know as the seeds were the first cause of why many Finches with thinner/smaller beaks died out first, as the Portulaca seeds are thin and soft and are easier food source for Finches with thinner, smaller beaks.
