This book is about a girl that has darker skin then everyone in her family and everyone in her school.  The children at school gave her nicknames that she did not like. She wants to look like her mom and sister and struggles with her self-esteem. Her mom talked with her and explained that beauty comes from the inside. She found her self identity and learned to accept herself in a positive light and her confidence grew.

This book is about standing up for your rights and when faced with injustice when it comes to teasing and intimidation. It talks about lifting others up in school and friendship and working together to overcome challenges. She is standing up for herself and her friends are helping her though the process.

Activity: An activity that you can do with the children is having the children explore their own cultural traditions. Have them share about their language and families and children can put together a collage with pictures and language, words that they use often, food etc. so that the children can share and can understand and develop empathy for all people by exploring different languages and traditions.
