This is the only remaining part of Lidice. This was the step of the building where the plan to get rid of the people in Lidice was finalized. The town was completely destroyed and for the sole reason that German leaders thought the Czech people were losing their "German" identity. Men were shot, women were sent to camps, and children were sent to be gassed at Chelmno, except for a few who were raised as German. The remaining people were killed in the bombing of the town which left the whole area in ruins. To the Germans, though, it wasn't enough to just demolish the town, they even dug up original graves and tore down all trees. This town was uprooted and it's people we're destroyed, for the sole reason of sending a message to the other towns in Czech to keep practice German ideology

These two pieces within the photograph are common items that were seen during the Holocaust. The yellow arm band was worn by those who were visually impaired. This type of identification was typical in order to give distinction among Jews. While the regular yellow arm band and the Star of David was used by all Jews, other bands, such as the three dots, were other common sources of identity. The other item is a wooden box, which was mainly used as an urn for ashes. When individuals perished and they were cremated, this was the container their family members would be allowed to use. It is alarming to see that the Jews that were cremated were placed into a wooden container instead of extravagant ones that we see today. Something so simple could be the most sacred to another.

Today we visited Lidice where 500 people use to live. In the exhibition we saw how these people had normal lives. Until, the town was blamed for helping the Czech paratroopers. These Czech paratroopers were he ones who murdered Heinrich. Once the Nazis came in the town, they immediately killed all the men. Mattresses and haystacks were put behind the men. The women were brought to concentration camps. As for the kids they were either killed or sent to leave. This was a massacre as none of these people had anything to do with the assassination. This is a photo of these kids looking at place that was once the town. You can see sadness on the kid's faces. When we went it was raining so the kids seemed to be crying. These statues looked so real. All I could do is stare into the eyes of the kids. What were going through their minds? It was very impactful as some of the kids looked like my siblings.
-Luke Lynam

Levice was a village that was destroyed by the germans to spread intimidation across Czech Slovakia and keep German ideology prioritized.

Today we visited Theresienstadt, a Jewish ghetto during World War II. Thousands of Czech, German, and Austrian Jews were sent to Theresienstadt between the years of 1941 and 1945. For these three and a half years, a synagogue existed under the noses of Nazi control. This make-shift synagogue was only recently discovered in a barn, yet the interior remained intact after all these years. This synagogue shows the perseverance and dedication of the Jewish people to their faith and proves that despite Nazi order, the Jewish faith remained stronger than ever.

This is the bloodstained shirt of one of the seven paratroopers who was involved in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The seven Czech airmen flew from England, then after killing Heydrich they hid in a church but were betrayed, so committed suicide to avoid capture by the Gestapo. In Prague, we also saw bullet holes in the wall of the church where they were hidden. It is very difficult to evaluate the whether the assassination was morally justifiable or not, Reinhard Heydrich was unimaginably cruel, however the assassination led to the arbitrary destruction of an innocent village, Lidice. This completely unbalanced retaliation showed the cruelty that arises in war, and how people stop valuing life when in reality it should be preserved at all costs.

Today, as we stood in the camp in Terezin, Mr. Barmore explained to us the difference between concentration camps and death camps. First, he mentioned how death camps were meant for death but concentration camps were meant for trying to reeducate people and make them conform to Nazi ideals. That was followed by him saying, "Concentration camps were not meant for Jews." This struck a chord with me because it made me fully understand that while the Nazis had multiple targets, they weren't trying to exterminate all of them, only the Jews. While many died in the concentration camps from overworking or starvation, that was not the purpose of them; the Nazis felt that the people in concentration camps could be "fixed" or "Germanized". But they did not believe that Jews could do anything to save themselves. They were born into death, it wasn't a path they could choose to steer away from. If one of your grandparents were Jewish, you could have been sent to a death camp, it did not take much. While this concentration camp had an arch marked "arbeit macht frei", which translates to "work will make you free", this statement in this particular place held some truth. They were there to work an conform. However, in places like Auschwitz, which claimed the same slogan, they were not there to work for freedom, they were there for one specific purpose and work would nothing would set them free from it.

As all the drawings in Terezin carry a lot of symbolism, this picture shows how when being filmed, everything was different than in reality. The truth of the situation can be seen on the left hand side of the drawing where you see a man starving in the dark.

Today in rainy weather, we we were able to visit the town of Lidice in Czech Republic and see where the town used to stand before it was demolished by the Nazis. A group of Czech paratroopers including the 7 of these men were assigned to train in England for a convert mission to assasinate one of the most influencial and high ranking Nazi officials, Reinhard Heydrich. On May 27 1942, (Operation Anthropoid) The group of paratroopers succeeded on assisinating Reinhard Heydrich by throwing a grenade in his car and eventually killed him. Later on, these 7 paratroopers were found hiding under a church by Nazi officials because of one of the paratroopers told them where they were, considering him as a traitor. The 7 paratroopers were pinned down by hundreds of Nazi officials outside the church, flooding the basement with water from the ouside. Recognizing the odds of them losing the fight, they fought and died the heroes death by killing themselves with their last bullets. These paratroopers acted with patriotism for having the courage to assasinate one of the most powerful Nazis until their last breath . They had the valour to die for their country no matter what their odds were on getting back alive. Until today, these paratroopers will be remembered as brave men who served justice in their actions.
- Colin Angelitud

After having seen the very powerful memorial in Lidice dedicated to the children murdered there, as well as others during the Holocaust and WWII, we were able to get a closer look into the town's destruction. While in the museum, we were able to read and see different exhibits/photographs detailing the horrific fate of many Lidice citizens. After having been 'initiated' by the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, Hitler planned a vengeful retaliation against the almost randomly selected town of Lidice. This plaque shows Hitler's official orders/response to the assassination, calling for the immediate murder of all adult men, then the deportation of the women, followed by the vague and ambiguous instructions for the children. In reality, few children were accepted into German society and the rest suffered one of the most gruesome fates, being gassed, seemingly contradicting Hitler's order to be 're-educated.'

At Lidice the Nazis destroyed the entire town because of false rumours that the town had a connection with the death of Nazi leader Heinrich Heydrich. The Nazis also killed 82 children from Lidice. What really shocked me was the fact that the Nazis even cut down all the trees in the village and dug up the dead in the old graveyard of Lidice so there would be no trace of the town left. This total destruction left me appalled. It's hard to comprehend how a group of people could be so heartless to take the lives of so many innocent people.

The woman is kneeling over looking for potato peels which is something you would not expect of a rich person. In Terezin there was not a lot of food available and this woman has reached a low point of hunger and lack of money. She searches for food wherever she can find it.
