Selye's model is a three-stage response to prolonged stress. Selye stated that the bodies reaction to trauma, disease, infection, injury, and stress are all almost identical. The body copes initially copes with these events very similarly. The three stages of general adaptation syndrome (GAS) is the alarm reaction, stage of resistance, and stage of exhaustion.

This occurs when the body mobilizes its resources to cope with added stress. Things like adrenaline, nonadrenaline, and cortisol are all produced in a greater amount to help the body endure incoming stress. These things can greatly help us in quick and stressful situations. However, this stage comes with headaches, fever, fatigue, upset stomach, etc. These are all symptoms of daily stressors like school and work.

The stage of exhaustion is the third and final stage of Selye's model. This stage occurs after all of the body's resources are depleted and stress hormones are no longer present. Some symptoms of this stage include anxiety, irritability, avoidance of responsibilities, and overuse of medicines.

Applying to colleges is most likely one of the most stressful times that a teenager has gone through this far. I have personally applied for early action to the University of Georgia. UGA is a very competitive school and one must have very good grades and test scores to be admitted as a freshman. Personally, I am on the stage of resistance because I am waiting on the decision to come out on November 22nd.

If I get deferred, it pushes the decision off a few months which will deplete my coping mechanisms. Hopefully this stage will not have to come up. However, if it does I will have to use a coping mechanism to get through to the second decision.
