Hi my name is Kaushik Karuru. Today I will be talking about politics that are seen through photography. Photos and videos are some of the best ways to convey a message to people around the world. Photos can start a movement. They can reveal a true meaning behind what my eyes or your eyes can see.

Photography as an art is an excellent way to show powerful messages and emotions about a certain event. It can show us the viewers of a certain photo the inequality, injustice and many other things. With seeing this it can start a reaction from us and eventually lead to some sort of action being taken. We all saw this in the famous Waiting for the Bust at the Memphis Terminal by Esther Bubley. In this photo we may see a regular photo that is taken on a bus terminal in Memphis in 1943 on a regular day. But when we deeply ponder and see the true meaning behind this image we see that there is racial segregation taking place. Bubley's work often showed racism through out the country.

Sanitation Workers by Ernest Withers

This image of sanitation workers on strike is photographed by Ernest Withers. It shows sanitation workers going on a strike and can be seen holding a power signs that say " I AM A MAN". This photo was taken during the Civil Rights Movement. The workers in this photo are protesting against the poor working conditions, low pay, and them not being treated as human beings. Withers' photo also captures inequality and racism and the fight for it. These workers are going on a strike in Memphis, Tennessee on March 28, 1968. This strike also led to Martin Luther King Jr. coming to Memphis to support these workers. He delivered his famous speech "I've Been to the Mountaintop", the day before his assassination in 1968. The reason this strike began was because of the deaths of black sanitation workers Echol Cole and Robert Walker who were killed by a failing garbage truck and the city did nothing in return for these workers and hence the strike of these workers began.
