What are some of your concerns regarding charter schools? What can be considered a 'pro' of charter schools?

As much as I am against unions, I see why they exist when I speak to teachers who have worked at charter schools. Granted there are some charter schools, which are successful, but for the most part, I hear horror stories from the way teachers are treated and the benefits they receive. Some of the pros of charter schools is that the schools have more flexibility to design their schools, which might make them more successful. This is due because there are no unions or teacher tenure. Charter schools are able to easily make decisions to that is aligned to their beliefs and values.

Rosana

A good friend works at a charter and makes a higher income than she would in her local public schools. Her school also has more money for things like books and field trips. PLus they have smaller class sizes. So not all charters are created equally! This is certainly going to be an increasing issue, especially with the current administration.

I think as with any school or district, Charter Schools have their advantages and disadvantages as well as the good schools and bad ones. To be honest, I don't have a lot of experience with Charter Schools and until a few years ago, I didn't know what they were. John Oliver offers an interesting (albeit rather negative) perspective on the pros and (mostly) cons of Charter Schools here (though I think I remember most of his issues being with for-profit Charters). It seems as though they can do a lot of good as experimental schools, offering curriculum and lessons that can't be found at mainstream public schools, but I think there is still a ways to go before they can really be a stable and viable option for students.

My initial thoughts on charter schools are mixed. On one hand, I can see how charter schools can give families another choice in the education that works for their child and some charter schools offer innovative ways of learning. On the other hand, corruption is a big issue, especially with for profit charter schools. A friend of mine taught at a charter school for a few years and was expected to be at school early, stay late, and come in on the weekends. Each teacher was required to run 2-3 clubs, and the principal treated teachers differently based on how often she saw them at school outside of the school day. Obviously, this is one person’s experience, but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth about charter schools.

I have a couple friends who work at a Charter School in San Bernardino and they are not pleased with how things are ran. I agree with Marga, not all charter schools created equally. I think it's a great idea for these charter schools to have an emphasis on a particular skill or content because it draws in students from possible lower income areas that may have a high interest in that and it provides new opportunities for those students.

-Ariel Mckinney

The concerns and praises I have for charter schools ironically are the same and that is the issue of flexibility of curriculum. The concern I have for charter schools are the ways they can choose to focus on certain topics that may leave out important issues. The flip side of that is by choosing curriculum and establishing their own system they can cater to their students in a special way which is great.

by Alejandra Lugo

I have mixed feelings about charter schools. This seems to be common. I think that charter schools can be good for a community if they have good, honest leadership and a clear mission. However, some charter schools seem to exist solely to funnel money into the bank accounts of the people in charge and their cronies. My sisters went to High Tech High in San Diego and had a great time learning in a very positive and effective environment. I teach in the Chino Valley Unified School District. OPA is a charter school that may not have a future in our district. There is a great deal of controversy surrounding how some of the funding was directed to a for profit company that is run by a relative of the school's director. Very shady.
