It is so much easier to keep up and create rapport with students when you see them physically -- it is much harder over the computer. Thankfully, I have students who have had me and know me better, but I feel that the students that I haven't had before will be missing out. Students can also hide a lot when they are not in constant contact with individuals at a school setting... that worries me about the mental health of some students that I know struggle.

I was very involved at my prior school and was able to get buy in. I am hopeful that the smaller cohorts will allow me to build those connections but limited as the kids will only see me as the teacher on Zoom in some capacity. It's hard to use my experiences in the Spring as a guide, because I already had established a rapport with my students in person. But when I had combined more than one class into Zoom meetings, I noticed many of my introverts logging in and then promptly leaving. Email and comments on Google Docs gave me a chance to check in with them, but ...

Telling stories is my "superpower". I like to joke with my friends that I tell stories for a living (i.e. history teacher). Year after year, what my students say they like best about my classes are the stories I tell. When I just stop lecturing, stop overhead notes, stop writing on the board, and just walk around the room and tell them some event from history. I can look each kid in the eye and really connect that event to them. By being in the room and "reading" each kid, I can know when I can personalize a story with a particular kid by cracking a joke (or be sarcastic). I make a real connection that way. When you tell a person a story you are giving them your time and your total attention. I think that's why the concept of "story time" has been around forever (be it sitting around a fire or a nightly ritual before bedtime with a child). People respond when you give them that connection. A video is just not the same, nor is a voice coming the computer even if it is live. There is a reason we invite Holocaust story tellers to SBHS, because it's so powerful. I am worried that no matter what I do over remote learning that I won't be able to make the kind of connection I did before.

When we are in the classroom it is a setting devoted to a specific type of interaction. When students are in their homes, they are likely to be contending with many distractions. I see challenges in creating a sense of community when students may feel pulled in other directions in their home environment.

I think it will be very difficult to learn about our students in a meaningful way in the time period we have via online platforms. In a classroom, it is much easier to identify and respond to challenges because the student is right in front of you. Now, students who like to "hide" in class are going to be ghosts. This will take creativity to learn about them.

I can see their body language, stimulate conversation, and perform formative assessments where introverts can "silently" tell me what they know in terms of content progression.
My biggest challenge is with the current schedule and my inability to meet with students all at once at distinct parts of the daily lesson as students are broken into AM and PM Cohorts. As the content builds on itself I will be working with students at different points of the lesson. The past few days I have heard ideas of ways to ease this transition a bit so it has been helpful to talk to colleagues and hear their ideas.

We are in general social creatures. Socializing and relationships takes proximity and interaction time. Time being either intermittent over many, many days or a large intense amount in a few days. On line learning does not create the socialization of proximity, nor the time and comfort. Relationships will be limited, artificial, and lacking meaningful depth.

I am concerned about creating meaningful relationships in a virtual world. I am encouraged by the 2 cohort system as we will have smaller numbers at a time. This will hopefully facilitate the getting to know you process. I am still worried about the limitations on relationships though. Teaching virtually will cause us all to come up with new ideas and be creative.
