The Korean War was a mix between a civil war and a revolution. It is mostly a civil war because the two sides were of a same country. It could also be considered a revolution because they are trying to overthrow opposing government systems. The Korean War conflict occurred because of North Korea's disregard for the border line. Afraid that North Korea was trying to encroach on capitalist territory, South Korea fought back. (A&E, 2020, para. 4).

The Korean War was initially fought with Geurilla war tactics to infiltrate South Korea with the least amount of North Korean casualties. As the US was not backing South Korea at this time, the Guerilla tactics worked in North Korea taking over the city of Seoul, South Korea. When bigger powers started getting involved, the dispute changed to major artillery fighting. There was an increase in artillery, bombs, flame throwers, and tanks. Bombs were introduced and cities were taken down in a flash while flame throwers could burn down a whole base in a few minutes. Casualties started increasing at an alarming rate. This and an influx of American soldiers helped South Korea to take back Seoul and push North Korea back to the border. (Millett, 2019, para. 3, 4, 13).

There was no clear winner of the Korean War as a cease fire was signed by both parties on July 27th, 1953. This armistice stopped the fighting but both North Korea and South Korea ended up with the same territory/ border line as before. The main country of Korea was kept split on the 38th Parallel line. The only difference was there was less people on each side. Nearly 5 million people died with half of them being Korean civilians and 40,000 being American soldiers. (PBS, 2021, para. 7).

The USA's goal in the Korean War was to prevent a non-communist area from becoming communist. This goal was overall a success as South Korea was able to keep it's capitalist government style. One article puts the goal perfectly when it states, "Determined not to 'lose' another country to communism, and interested in shoring up its anticommunist credentials, the Truman administration found itself defending a nation a world away from U.S. soil," (Archives, 2021, para. 10). The goal was achieved as America re-secured the border between North and South Korea.

How did the outcome affect the United State's current relationship with both parts of Korea?

America's partnership with South Korea was strengthened and America gained a loyal ally. However, the relationship with North Korea and more importantly, China was even more damaged. China being a communist state made relations before the war poor but became even worse after the war. As of now, the US avoids any relationship with North Korea and China. Only a business relationship is known today for trading purposes. However, our relationship with South Korea made a thriving economy for South Korea. Tourism was in high demand and colleges are accepting foreign exchange students. Trade has provided a lavish agreement for both the US and South Korean economies. South Korean-Americans are for the most parted treated as equals. (Now with COVID-19, asian hate is at an all time high. Normally there is hardly any mention of asian hate in America. It is still around but barely. Some people are too small brained and can't accept that not everyone is the same). Korean-Americans are allowed the same rights as anyone whether it be to education, work, or play.
