This career interests me because I want to be able to help children in need. I was a child who struggled mentally, and I would've loved to have a counselor. It's important that children have adults they can trust and confide in.

In the video, I was slightly confused about what the children were being counseled on. Was it about their relationship with race? It was the only children's counseling observation video I could find, but this isn't the type of counseling I was considering. I want to help children understand their feelings and relationships with the world. It's a scary feeling being a child, especially when the adults around you may not be making the best choices. I would want to help them the best way that I can by understanding their environment in that way.

I currently work at the Central Library downtown as a Janitor, studying communications. I want to be a counselor because I want to help children out of the headspace I found myself in as a child and teenager. But that may be a reason why I shouldn't do it. I might find it a challenging career to pursue because I will take their issues home with me. I will feel the same way they do, and I won't be able to leave work. It would be difficult knowing that all I can do is listen and call CPS if things are awful for the child, but nothing else. I might not be able to deal with it; it may weigh on me.

What have I learned from this reflection?

I've learned that I may not be strong enough to be a children's counselor. I don't know if I can go to work every day and forget everything a child might tell me, or if I'll be able to forget the horrors I might be told. It might hurt too much not to be able to help the children more than to listen. So, maybe being a counselor isn't in my future. Maybe I'll have to rethink my path.
