Our birth decides that our life is full of mystery. We can create our history, but it is not always how we would like. The obstacles that come with it are unplanned and come with no warning. Sometimes you have to get your head underwater to realize how wonderful breathing feels. I'm the girl who doesn't speak much about how she feels or how I see the world. I want my name to reach the books, but how can I do that when socializing is so tricky? When I read this chapter, it made me think, is this the person I want to be remembered as? The truth is, my whole life, I have been hiding who I am. Honestly, I have been so hidden that I forgot how it felt to smile without faking it. I forgot how amazing it feels to laugh, how it feels to be me. I have been a person with two personalities the one I keep to myself and the one I want to show the world. I always wanted to be open and the person I truly am. Still, it was challenging since I was young; my parents and friends never seemed to like it. I learned that faking a smile makes people like you, being quiet is more peaceful, and being alone makes you expect less. Being remembered isn't essential to me, and if dying with no meaning is what my written history has brought me to, I don't want that. I have a lot of accomplishments, I have done so much with my life, but it wasn't enough. I have been stuck in four walls for such a long time that I haven't been able to see and feel new energies. I always keep to myself even though I hope to have friends who accept me and create memories with people who can become part of my history. My name nabi means butterfly, and so far, I haven't been much of one. My history, name, and life will be worth a good death, and I won't let my abilities to be successful go down the drain.

Taking things for granted

This quote says, "Some people don't always know what they have until it's gone." It's okay to break up with people, and letting them go is okay if they aren't good to you. I have always thought of humanity as predators who feed on others' energies and emotions. I have faced so many fake friendships in nineteen years I have not yet met someone who has shown me true friendship. I have never taken things for granted, but I have been the one who got taken for granted. A lot of people say I'm cold-hearted, but the truth is I'm loving, caring, sweet, and kind. This world has made me hide those feelings because every time I show my love, it is taken and hurts me. People are complex and complicated. Sometimes, they are so antagonistic that it feels nearly impossible to find anything remotely redeeming about them. I sometimes feel small, looked down on, and disregarded; my thoughts are of little importance my words have no meaning on the weight of the world. I wonder if I could get back a fraction of what I have given. Let me be realistic my efforts have been unrecognized, and my soul keeps wishing to be noticed and valued, to be worth thinking about and to be understood, but instead, I get taken for granted.

My grandma gave me a weekly dollar allowance when I was five years old. I had neighbors who would make a yard sale every Saturday, and they sold their children's toys, clothes, and collections. I remember my first purchase was a plushie duck; I still have the duck plush, which cost me a dollar. I remember that day I saw it, and I didn't take my money with me, so I had to go back home running to get the allowance my grandma had given me; the lady who was selling it told me she would hold onto it until I went to grab my dollar. I remember running as fast as I could to ask my grandma if I could get a dollar from the money she had saved for me, and she gave it to me. I ran to the yard sale, and the lady gave me the plushie. I knew from that day on I would cherish this plush, so I named it Patin and took it everywhere up to 12 years old. It was my companion, and I always kept it to remind me of my grandma, who has passed away. I don't know what made me pick that duck when I had so many options, but I saw it, and at that exact moment, I wanted it. It was something I wanted, and I didn't want to lose it. I remember the thoughts I had while running to get my allowance, "I hope no one takes it, I want it. What should his name be?" This was a great purchase because my duck plushie was bought with my grandma's money, making it much more special. I grew up in a low-income home with four more siblings, and we had to share most toys; having something that was only mine felt nice.

Sociology is a pair of glasses that will help me see the world from a different perspective. Curiosity is the word that caught my attention in this chapter, and sometimes I'm overwhelmed with the insatiable desire to learn. To understand humanity and how the human body works, the study the difference and similarities of each religion. There is a quote by Robyn Condley Downs that states, "when you replace judgment with curiosity, everything changes" I think judgment is considerable in this world; many people, even me, judge without reason. Judging others is sometimes entertainment for other people. It could be that it is easy to judge and difficult to understand. Understanding requires compassion, patience, and believing in a good heart. Judging is a defense against feeling inadequate because when judging, we hide the fear of unworthiness and choose to attack others instead of helping others heal. Sociology is a challenge that allows you to see the world through the lens of different cultures and communities. I look forward to gaining this skill.

Dog Meat

In the United States, dogs are seen as companions, best friends, loving, and even part of the family. My dog is my therapist, diary, soulmate, and best friend. I don't know what I would do without her. She gives me everything I ever wanted and is the one who listens and never leaves my side. She is what many people call my weak spot, and I would do anything for her. It breaks my heart to know that other cultures eat dog meat and are missing out on how wonderful it is to have a dog. Vietnam and South Korea consider dog's food. About 2.8 million dogs are raised on dog farms in South Korea, and 1 million of these dogs get killed and eaten. According to a survey done in 2018, about 3.9% of the South Korean population consumes dog meat. We refer to dog meat as "Bosintang," which means body-protecting soup in Korea. Bosintang is made out of dog meat and vegetables. In Taiwan, to have health benefits, they consume dog meat; they believe it improves circulation and raises body temperatures, and they find the vitamins it contains beneficial. As this is considered "normal" from this cultural perspective, I think this is extremely cruel and should not be regarded as a cultural norm. The sad part is that most dogs that go into these farms get brutally abused and killed. Empathy plays a significant role in this, Americans tend to have more compassion for dogs than other cultures.

Americans think their bodies aren't perfect and want to increase or decrease their weight by using a holy medical examiner to work on them to turn them back into perfect humans. The way Americans function nowadays is that they don't watch their figures, causing them to gain fat and lose motivation to work out. This affects the human body, and the only way to help it is to get surgery. Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty that improves a person's appearance and reconstructs facial and body tissue defects. It helps a person feel more confident, and a holy doctor can help them. In Korea, we like to get surgery to help us gain confidence and improve our appearance; in Korea, appearance is vital.

Sometimes I may feel trapped in calamity time after time. They say patience and silence are better than expressing how you feel, and I chose silence to live a regular quiet, drama-free life; it's hard to want to open up and not have any idea how to start a conversation. It is hard when you feel alone; no one or anything can help that feeling; silence is hard, and sometimes it can be depressing, its dark but also it has its benefits; I think being silent enables you to keep close attention to what's around you, you're able to see things other may be blind to see, you learn to read people, being quiet isn't a challenge for you. I always preferred silence, but am I silent? Does that voice in my head not count? We talk to ourselves more than we speak. We have thoughts and a listening ear, and nothing is kept private when we're alone. Not saying anything is saying everything. When you are silent and alone, you learn to read people's movements, eyes, fake smiles, and unrealistic characteristics; it is easy because when you are quiet and isolated, the world is so loud you have no choice but to listen.

Love is a powerful word, and caring is a strong feeling; sympathy comes in various situations. You have to allow yourself to be loved; there's fear of getting hurt, no matter what has happened in the past; allowing yourself to be loved will help you feel emotions. It is a lie to think you don't deserve love. If you aren't able to love yourself, what makes you think someone will love you? Sympathy it's hard for me to show towards strangers, friends, family, co-workers, teachers, and just people. I do care. I think I care a little too much at times. My goal in life is to help as many people as possible. I sympathize with older people because they need that extra help. I love kids and want them to grow up with a good life. Everyone should be able to celebrate life because it is so beautiful, capturing the moment and all those fantastic memories. Every particular time is valuable, and I want to give others a good memory of me and care for them because we all need a little love and care to keep going forward.

Spicy fish stew

A totem food I enjoy is fish; I like to make spicy fish stew; it's a Korean dish it goes as "Maeun tang." Maeun tang is a spicy fish stew; traditionally, a whole fish is used in the dish, including the head and the bones. The fish is cut into pieces and then simmered in an anchovy-based broth with vegetables and occasionally tofu. At the same time, the whole dish is usually spiced with gochujang chili paste and chili pepper flakes. The stew is healthy, especially if I add a large variety of vegetables; adding spices helps give it more taste. Being able to cook spicy fish stew is all thanks to the fishermen who put their life on the line to get the fish I need for my stew; in a Marxist lens perspective, I think fishermen are forced to work longer hours in sometimes unsafe conditions to make enough money to survive. Fishermen and farmers should get paid better for their work to bring us healthy and organic foods. According to an article, fishermen are reducing seafood waste by providing people with fish for their food and livelihoods. Fishing is one of the primary forms of food production; it ranks with farming and probably predates it.
