Health is a Human Right by Joseph Godinez

Every human being on earth is entitled to a basic set of human rights. Whether this is via adequate healthcare or by ensuring vaccinations against deadly diseases all of these are important health factors that must be met by every country. Essentially, everyone has a right to a certain standard of living which is a healthy and adequate lifestyle.

This article talks about the COVID-19 global crisis and how many countries showed and continue to show political unwillingness in supporting global health. For example, the U.S. had pulled out of committed funds to the WHO further weakening the global response towards the pandemic. Many other countries included in the European parliament also decided to reduce funds for key areas of global health research. This was all done during the ongoing pandemic which shows how some countries might seek to advance economic ends instead of health rights. In a time of global insecurity, it is essential for these groups of nations to come together and aid in any possible ways for the benefit of the health of the population. There is a need for the prioritization of health as was seen in previous disease initiatives such as AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, etc.

This article goes over how middle and lower-income countries suffer the greatest consequences when it comes to delivering health care in the face of a pandemic. Countries with economic and health resource challenges already face dire circumstances and with the higher income nations using most essential resources for themselves, it is very difficult for these smaller nations to control the disease. The article goes over how the world's nations can come together and aid one another. For example, nations that are in a better position to assist other nations can financially assist, send medical aid, communicate clearly, advise other nations, etc. This article shows how this is more than just political or economic but more so in protecting people who are in dire need of assistance.

This article goes over some very ethical concerns regarding the distribution of treatment and vaccines for groups of people. The main goal in this research article was to distinguish which groups need the vaccine first and the fairest way to assess that. The article concluded that those in high-risk settings such as doctors, nurses, immunocompromised, etc, were groups of people who should get treatment first. Another proposition was to prioritize even within the prioritized groups since these groups would surely require more vaccines/treatments than was on hand at that certain moment during the pandemic. As well as evidence-based evaluation in order to minimize corruption and waste of treatments provided, etc.
