2.4 Finding collaboration partners outside the classroom by Teacher Academy

Add an entry to your Learning Diary reflecting on which people from your community you or your students could engage with. Think about if you have contacts to or knowledge of networks of local professionals? Which organisations or people engage with the school on a regular basis? Are there any businesses working with the school such as caterers, IT companies, or sports organisations? Who are your school's neighbours? Could they be approached? What about school alumni? And who could you or your students ask for support in identifying the right people? Think about these questions as you draft your Learning Diary entry and then post your entry also in this Padlet. Please, always remember to mention your first name, last name and country of origin. Anonymous comments do not encourage dialogue.

Nearly all of my male students practice football while female ones prefer dancing or rhythmic gymnastic. I think it is a good idea to practice sport at least twice a week and in our school there are projects about football, volleyball, roller skating. The last one supported by our school is a project for girls about cheerleaders. It goes without saying that it is a success!!!!

I teach EFL and any project we develop should be English, which limits our audience resources regarding the Spanish context. I got American and British friends but they're not involved in any particular activity on which students could do a project. There're plenty sports organisations, choirs and local singers/bands but they couldn't help with English. Because of this, I think our best choice would be to work with another school but kids wouldn't be really motivated to use English so I don't think it'll be successful. Maybe finding a way for my friends to help with the class is the best option.

I have always heard of eTwinning projects but never joined any. In Italy we have something called "Alternanza Scuola Lavoro" (School-Work Experience) which necessarily involves some bodies outside the school but the problem is English as there may not be bodies enough specializing in English though we search often for universities or colleges we may rely upon. Voluntary associations are a resource too but not for English. For technical and vocational education this works out more easily. I think I'll explore a bit more in depth what eTwinning is and how students can benefit from it

I have a personal account on eTwinning. Once I got in touch with a French teacher and we got our students to get to know by writing cards. The topic was 'Christmas'. Last year I also met a Turkish teacher in a facebook group run by an Australian teacher, and we got our students in touch and they started to send letters. Some of them also started to text on social networking sites. They were very excited and wanted me to correct their letters because they didn't want mistakes in their letters. They also were more motivated in checking new words on the dictionary because they started to gain awareness of the importance of the English language as a means of communication. Unfortunately it's not possible for my middle school to engage students with professionals speaking English. There are some organizations whose members are English teachers that go to schools and spend some days with students by doing CLIL activities or drama and lots of other things but you have to pay for that and our students' families can't afford extra expenses.

Another way to find partners is to invite alumni who are studying at the Universities the subjects that we are teaching. Asking them to come to their old school to share experiences and talk about a topic in order to motivate younger colleagues seems to be interesting. It will also be interesting to invite parents or family members who practice professions related to the subjects we are teaching. It will be more difficult to get people who are experts in the areas of study ... but it never hurts to try!

To develop Collaborative Future Classroom Scenarios, we have to thinking about how education will change in the coming years, and what teachers and education as a whole will need to adapt to. We do this by involving a number of experts who we call stakeholders. These include a varied collection of individuals who have very different perspectives on the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The stakeholders include teachers and school leaders, and experts in ICT such as ICT technicians and technology providers. Together these people form a Core Group of stakeholders. Each member of this core group should also consult with other individuals who have different ideas about what changes are likely to happen in the near future. These Wider Community Stakeholders include other teachers, students, members of the ICT industry and possibly governors or parents, and local or national policy-makers.

The ideas these stakeholders provide are called trends. These trends are changes in society and technology that learning and teaching can take advantage of or adapt to. Good examples of this are the increase in student owned personal devices such as smart phones or tablets, but may also include social changes such as national policy initiatives.

http://fcl.eun.org/toolset1

A lot of our teachers have worked outside of school in another job before. Hence, I consider them as experts and specialists. However, as I teach in the area of general education, my subjects being math, English and German, my lessons most of the time lack expertise. For me it would be best if I could cooperate more with my collegues in the sense of interdisciplinary teaching maybe.

In our school, we have established contacts with several parents who have taken part in our career day. We have a wide panel of professionals who are ready to interact with our students. Furthermore, our school is located in a technopole, hence we have a huge variety of companies on our doorstep: architects, lawyers, advertising, information technology, medical sciences, research, restaurants and many more. We would have to contact them in order to see which ones could engage with the school using English as a language of communication (we are an international school situated in France)..

Students also attend talks and activities outside the school, which are always welcomed.
As a teacher of ESL, I try to look for activities to do outside the school (going to the cinema or the theater, visiting the airport or relevant places in the city with a British background....). I have also thought about contacting native people to visit the groups and have some kind of exchange but it is not always as easy as it may seem.

Hello colleagues, what good things you do! I have involved some parents who have specific skills for simple workshops and a small project, which I hope can be carried forward this year too. It is a veterinarian, then a person capable of making origami and introducing ourselves to Japanese culture and a farmer who has vineyards. There are three areas that directly involve the interests of children in the classes and the proposal is to prepare with these adults the activities to be presented to their companions. Unfortunately, these small steps are complicated to implement for bureaucratic reasons and habits. The children are from Primary School but from the first experience I have observed that they are proud to be able to do things with the big ones and also to propose their activities from their interests.
Emma

I am very fond of E-twinning. I have been running e-twinning project for several years now. I agree with te fact that this safe site and community gives students a strong motivation for language improvement but also in self-evaluation and cooperation, They work in groups which is useful to let everyone feel having a role and a goal to achieve according to their natural inclinantions. Moreover the fact that they interact with real students makes their work meaningful . Also, they want to do well, they ask me to correct their own texts, they put lots of energy and efforts to produce nice interesting and attractive outputs, which indeed they do. Their creativity can be easily expressed by working in E-twinning. In conclusion the students have lots of benefits, they improve social , linguistic digital and literacy competences as well as enterpreuneurship one. As for networks of local professionals there are some which regularly work with our students, they are generrally sport clubs or art clubs but I think that No PBL approach is used in this kind of experience , so it is not always so attractive for students to follow and to learn.

Finding a professional expert that could come to our classes to help the students with a project would be a wonderful way to engage them in their work.

The external collaboration will help the students to connect with real world and that what they are doing has a meaning and could be used in real life. On the other hand, a person who is working continuously in a topic and knows the actual problems that could appear in the process of developing a project will be able to make the students go deeper in the knowledge of this topic.

I think that it is possible to find collaboration inside and outside the school. Could it be partners experts in one topic (app development for ITC, competition organization for Physical Education, economics in general for a project administration, etc.). From outside the school it would be nice to count with help of some parents that are working in a field related with the topic of one project (business people, restaurant owners, lawyers, architects, (graphic) designers, pharmaceuticals, nutritionists, etc.). I’m quite sure that there are a lot of them with a lot of to explain in our classes and willing to do it. We can also think about collaboration from people from the business around the school (besides, most of them bring their children here) or from some colleagues from other schools that have experience with a determinate kind of project or field of work. It would be a good idea, as well, to find researchers in the topic related with our project, but I find it more difficult.

Unfortunately, we don’t collaborate a lot with external partners; neither with our collegues in our own school. Most of my students are adults and teachers too and we are focused in learning the language. I tried last year to do a linguistic exchange between my teenagers learners and those from a secondary school in Germany, but it was not very successfull. I think teenagers were too busy with their secondary subjects and, as our education is not mandatory (even though official), I felt them not very involved in the Project.

By colleagues in our school is the same: we are very busy because of the rigid curricula and we have no time enough to prepare a real multidisciplinary Project. We do collaborate in organising a common party at the end of the course, but each language section is focused in preparing its part, so I think it is not really the collaboration we are looking for our students.

At the school where I work we have invited athletes from the local sports centre as well as athletes distinguished in Paraolympic games. An ex rally driver who owns a school for safe driving was another guest who has shared his experience and knowledge with our students. Contacts with organisations is quite ordinary. From the Advocate for children to representatives of charity organisations. We haven't cultivated a relationship with local authorities though, which is something we should promote in our pbl programmes as it is well stressed on this course.

Nevertheless there are difficultioes in such cooperations. In case that a non-state professional or business cooperate with the school, a substantial amount of colleagues and parents would disapprove it and would protest against it. It is noteworthy that such cooperations with the school (non-state ones) are currently registrated in Greece, therefore there are still prejudices with regard to such cooperations.
On the other hand there are state institutions which cooperate with the school (the local hospital, the local forestry authority and the Technological Institute of Education, which is at 15 km far from the school). This cooperation could be a better one.
Bringing an expert to the classroom is a procedure which requires a lot of buraucracy in Greece, therefore it is more simple to visit the expert in the context of an excursion.
Parents are not very willing to cooperate with the school in such issues.

Last year, through a facebook post in one of the many groups of teachers I'm involved in, there was a chance to do a penpals and conference project via skipe with students from a school in Indiana, USA. The students defined the topics they would like to discuss and how they would do it, and for two weeks would prepare their presentations. This project was very important in the development of communicative skills and in the development of linguistic fluency in English. The students have done some videos about our school and the community we are involved in and learned many things about the way American students live. It was a great way to work collaboratively with the outside world and all students did their best to accomplish this project.

I would like to share a project that took place in our Kindergarten last year. It engaged the firefighters in our community. Our project was about fire. Children started talking about fireman and we went on a fieldtrip to the firefighters headquarters. We got to listen to what they do to help all people in need. We also saw how they put on their uniform using all the safety rules and got inside a firetruck and an ambulance. Above all, we learned how to prevent fires and were amazed about all the different tasks firefighters have and how crucial they are in our community. Back at school we built a three dimensional firetruck that we could actually pretend to ride! We also received a very special gift from two firefighters. They wrote us a letter thanking us for our visit and sent us three firefighter uniforms that we could get all dressed up in during playtime. At home and at school, we asked many questions and tried to find all the answers in books and all the internet. We also asked our family, friends and colleagues what they knew about firefightes. At the end of our project, we invited our classrooom friends to our class so that we could share all the amazing discoveries about firefighters and also tell them what we can all do to prevent fires. Unfortunatley, there was a big fire here in Portugal soon after our Project and we brought in food and clothes to help people in need that suffered great damage due to this terrible fact. We really learned to respect and admire all the firefighters!

Itseems tthat all the teachers that run a project like this have the same idea of working with partners outside the classroom. Real job interviews in Poland, researhing local sin the community in barcelona ...I also tried to apply this in one project with no connection with Erasmus and it also worked really well. Kids interviewed citizens about a topic they were reserching. They learnt a lot. For instance, kindergarten kids receive the visit of firefighters as a part of their project of means of transport, as they come to show kids how they work, how the truck works, etc. But not only this but also students invite their parents to school to talk about their jobs. kids repare small conferences with their father/mother/relative and they bring to school their work stuff or in some cases, students go out to see these with their own eyes.
Even though our school is in a village, we try to collaborate with as many organizations as possible. This year, we are to start collaborating with local organizations that help refugees and other newly Arrived Migrants as a part of our Erasmus+ Ka219.

I'm an eTwinner only since last year. I founded a project named "Maths with Art", for my 8th grade class of Maths, and I had two italian partners (one was co-founder). This project got eTwinning Quality Label, and I'm very proud because it was my first project. I also was partner in another project, with a 9th grade class, and that project got also the EQL. Students loved this kind of work because it was the first time they did something like that, and with foreign schools! It was a great experience. Usually my school doesn't have contacts with local professionals or other organisations, except with students that attend "Professional Courses" and they are very few. For example, there is a project at my school, called "Educate for Health", where health workers such as nurses, ... come to school to talk and talk with students about health issues. Sometimes visits are made to museums, to the planetarium, to a dam, ... and then, the students get in touch with different areas of work and dialogue with these professionals.

I am a kindergarten teacher working in a 3 years old classroom,so it does not make much sense to involve children in the surrounding community. However, depending on the project in which we are working, we always look for someone from outside the School, but connected to the theme, to be invited to speak with the students, to make the activity determined or to be part of something that we are preparing. For example, two colegues (last academic year) in the 5 years old classroom, were developing a project about space and were able to arrange a video call with a well-known American astronaut. The children prepared the questions they wanted to ask, and in the end their joy was contagious, something they will never forget. This year, in the 3 years old classroom, we are making a project about vegetable gardens and we will invite the grandfather of one of the children, who devotes much of his time to his garden, to come to school teach us how to build and maintain. Let's also visit community gardens.

Establishing the bonds with the local community sees to be the smallest problem at all our schools. We have a widely developed charity section and voluntary service whose members regularly visit Senior Houses, social centres, various institutions like hospices, etc. Our students use the knowledge of experts from outside in a lot of branches as we often organise interdisciplinary projects for example with the local universities or medical academies. Not only do we invite professionals with long experience but also try to keep in touch with our graduates who managed to enter good colleges or universities, were successful in any enterprises, won awards or simply managed to organise their lives with the help of all knowledge they inherited from our schools. This type of P2P education seems to be most effective and, believe it or not, the meetings os students with former students fulfils our assembly hall to the last seat. What is also worth mentioning, our school is a centre and home to may institutions like British Council, Goethe Institute, Erasmus+, IB and UCAS, Amnesty International and many many others which means that we organise public events for all who want to participate in them even if they do not belong to the school community.

Puh...this is a hard one for me. First, I‘m quite a shy person when it comes to creating new contacts, I‘m not your born networker, but rather a loner. Obviously, as a teacher I have overcome this side of my character time and again but this requirement of PBL doesn‘t exactly have me shout ‚hurray!‘

For Art working together with artists, photographers and architects would come to mind. I have worked together with a professional photographer who I knew as a mum from my daughter‘s kindergarten and the Artwork we created together with my students was quite awesome. I feel reluctant, though, to ask her again, since the school has no funds to pay for her work so I would have to ask her to do it for free or I would also have to take care of the funding. This is also true for artists or actors since they usually depend on being paid for their work. I have tried working with a dad who is a photographer but he let me down on a project because he was unhappy about the school‘s approach concerning his kid‘s problem. And the same happened to my friend with a radio-dad. So in my experience real-world problems come pushing in hard when you try to find a real-world actor.

I am very enthusiastic about etwinning but had EXTREME problems with the hardware when trying to upload data. I‘m waiting for my school to introduce a BYOD-policy before going for a more complex project again.

Still, my brain is working hard to find some out-of-school audience for my Baroque still life-PBL I‘m creating for this course.

Besides, we have contacts with private associations dealing with sports and voluntary work as well as with private firms and offices. There is also a satisfying network with local firms and professionals with which the school plans a number of simulated working projects for the students attending the last three years of technical and vocational secondary school. However, we are still far from organizing interdisciplinary projects together with schools from other countries.

WOW! It’s a real challenge. In my school we have already counted on the collaboration of experts from our community to develop some projects, for example once we had a public speaking coach helping us to prepare students who would participate in an international competition. However, I still don’t see that the way we work with projects reflects the principle of PBL. I do think that in our school projects are neither the main dish nor the dessert; it is something in between. So, our projects are not really going beyond the school walls and not involving the community at all. I wish we could develop a project that will allow students to build something with and for the community. For example: they could help to develop a software or a system that will help our city library to be accessible to people with special needs. In order to do this project, they would need the help of local librarians, experts on people with special needs, IT teachers, etc.

Actually, there quite many possibilities to find collaboration partners outsider the classroom for our school. First of all, there are 8 Waldorf schools in Estonia, 2 Waldorf schools in Latvia and many in Finland and they are all potential partners. Schools sometimes visit each other to perform concerts or plays, sometimes field trips are organised. We could definitely take one step further and think of a project together. There also is a social home in the neighborhood, our students visit it with concerts on Christmas and other festivals. As to attracting experts, we could involve parents. I think that a problem with outside experts is that very few people are willing to work without being paid and being a part of a project IS work

From my point of view my school's collaboration with outside partners is on quite good level. My colleagues focus on finding professionals who could give the most knowledge and skills in given topic as possible. So, for example when younger students have a lesson about forest they go to have a lesson in a forest with woodsman who interacts with them using real life examples. When students are going to have some arts and crafts about decoupage a hobbyist in that field is invited to teach them how to do it. Or when they have a lesson about sea life they are going to an Aquarium to check sea life there and find some answers from their worksheets. When older students have a history lesson given by historian from Institute of National Remembrance. Or lessons given by parents who are representing different job titles.
Our students also participate in lessons organised an lead by museums educational workers.
They also have a chance to see shows in various theatres (musical, puppet show, philharmonic). Some of the plays are designed to ask audience to join the play or to give answers or ask question about what is going on on a stage.
In all those occasions students can cooperate with professionals and ask questions they normally wan't ask during lesson.

As I am assistant and supporter in most of occasions it is quite hard to organise and participate in co-working with professionals. I can see great chance for my school and our students in PBL. Not only as collaboration with each other but also in creating networks of professionals. Sometimes I feel like students would like to have bigger impact on what is going on around them. I also see that they do not respect others and surroundings well enough because they say "it is not mine" or "it wasn't me". They don't feel responsible for anything that happens around them. I think that PBL and cooperation with people from outside the school may widen their perspective and open their eyes that anything they do or say have an impact on surroundings.

For me as an origami instructor I can see that only younger students are interested in folding. For them it is fun when they can create something by themselves. Older students, as soon as they have different subjects with different teachers, they see origami useless. I can remind them that it helps them understand geometry, perspective, build their confidence, keep their work neat, build focus skills and memory but they are too busy with gaining better marks.
During summer I take part in Origami Convention organised by Polish Origami Society and adults from around Poland gather in one place to exchange their knowledge and share new models. Some of them are teachers but some of them do other things too. Currently I am thinking about inviting those people to join my lessons and ask them to introduce students to the benefits of origami in their professional work. Maybe then students finally give a better chance to themselves and try to find some time for origami.

I think that most of the businesses working with school are mostly organisations who offer extracurricular activities for students. From time to time our school community is rising some money as donation for foundations who need such kind of help. In that occasions we sell some homemade cakes or organise auction. From time to time we also ask to donate some money strait to moneyboxes prepared for those occasions. The only responsibility for students there is to assist with collecting.

Students rarely rise their own ideas what to do. Mostly because our educational system does not allow much activities like this. Also because to much things students must be thought on regular basis. Well I start to see that it makes them more and more bored. Sometimes I hear great ideas but lack of power to do so. It looks like excuses "we have to keep up with the teaching plan" or "we already had event or trip" makes them feel irritated. They start to see no need in sharing great ideas at all.

I am not sure how it works with school alumni. My school is kind of young, some of them still study, some of them live in other countries and continents. Unfortunately I haven't heard about anyone who would like to join our school and see how it goes now or wish to make some project with current teachers and/or students.

I think that identifying right professionals won't be too hard. Students in my school are quite creative and they are quite good in searching the right things. We could research or ask people around as for assistance due to the fact that our parents are professionals in many fields.

It has a lot of graduates who work in very different jobs in the city. The best way to learn about who could help to teach, evaluate or just to present to would be asking the experienced and long time teachers in the school. Principals and vice principals would also provide information about who does what and even establish the initial contact with professionals who could be involved in some way in PBL projects. School's alumni would be another very useful organisation to establish effective ties with to seek professionals who could contribute. In all, there seems to be a lot of good opportunities for our students to learn to establish "real life" connections with people outside the school.

In this particular school where I am teaching now, one of the things we do is to invite the parents to participate and share their expertise in the classroom. This not only brings extra, hands-on knowledge to the children but also motivates them. They are always very proud of having their parents participating in class with them. We have also liaised with an american school through Skype sessions and writing letters, where children had to work together to introduce their own school, how it works and local communities to the foreign learners.

I think I can find external collaboration from my school alumni and parents. I remember some years ago there was a student whose mother was a chemist and she showed the class the lavoratory where she worked and it was very interesting.
On the other hand, Etwinning is a very useful tool to look for collaboration. Nowadays we are collaborating in a project, but we want to develope another one.
