“What” is being represented

The “what” in terms of representation of subject in the classroom refers to the multiple ways a student is being taught based on perception and comprehension. The representation of a subject is important because all students learn differently and providing multiple ways to learn is essential. For example, using comprehension strategies such as highlighting topic sentences and details and facts that support the topic could help a student understand an important event or context clue in the text for a comprehension question. Another strategy is to give students background knowledge on the text before they read it. I usually tie it in as a part of the engagement. This could be a circle meeting or a short video clip and discussion.
Another example of the “what” of representation is teaching different types of way to teach symbols or decoding by introducing creative and effective ways for s student to be able to learn such as using kinesthetics or drawing pictures or a storyboard of the learning or manipulatives.
A perceptual approach to the “what” of representation is using an appropriate speed of speaking and tone of voice. It also involves using appropriate size of lettering for text, captions, props and auditory clips. This also includes visuals such as diagrams and charts.

“How” they express

“How” students express their new learning or to be able to foster their new learning. Each student does so differently so providing opportunities for them to express themselves in different ways is also essential to the learning process. An example is physically using their bodies to write or use them to express learning typing or acting out a new learning. Expressing their skills and fluency by using technology or props is another chance for students to express themselves. Executive functions such as testing, class planners, and reward charts are also ways for students to be able to expresss their learning.

“Why” or “want” to learn

This area is my favorite part because I know I am a teacher and will be there for the students and do my best to serve them in anyway they may need. The engagement is my favorite because students get to relate the topic to their own lives. Also, choosing activities appropriately and with student interests at mind. Teacher reminders of the process, and directions is another way for students to remember what they are doing or stay on task. Complementing efforts and persistence is a huge factor because good behavior and deeds is always better when noticed and expressed by a teacher.
