I think there are a lot of vestiges of "how things were" or how they "used to be" that we don't necessarily take the time to interrogate or push back on. It feels really important that we listen to new staff members who come with a new perspective.

Coming from a school where there was no diversity, it's amazing to be part of a staff where there is so much diversity. I also think the fact that we have a vision statement around our DEI work, it's at the forefront of all we do, and is something we're continuing to work with and learn about, is so important.

Excel takes the time to talk about diversity, equity, & inclusion in a way that a lot of other organizations don't. I do think that we have room to grow in this area (i.e. talking about it more, ensuring that DEI is part of all our conversations/decisions being made).

We are not honest enough. For the sake of being polite and normative we allow things to remain one way and that can be very destructive. Diversity of thought, disagreements and even conflict leads to growth. These are not bad words, if we are able to keep an open mind and learn to listen to each other.
