When i want to create a lesson with algorithms i always use a problem " Towers of Hanoi'. Students think it's a game they try to solve it and finaly understand the meaning of creating algorithms.

My students are in early years. So i prepared a little bit easier version of paper plane activity. All the students made paper planes and they flied all of them. And then they observed the how far they could fly and they measured by colored ropes. And the end of the lesson they discussed how to make a change for better flies. And they tried again. Some students put papers and paper clips on their planes to making heaviness on their planes. They were flied better. And children were happy to try new solutions

Last week I did lesson with my classes about movement. They had to choose any kind of movement, record it and then analyse it. It was very interesting for them but there were few problems: it required lots of time, many of them do not have necessary digital skills and if they do not know basic laws of kinematics it do not have any meaning. I am a teacher of pre-school education. I use abacus to develop mathematical abilities. Kids willingly count with abacus and guesswork. Kids choose games themselves with their own numbers (which they like). Therefore, always lessons need to be prepared for many different tasks. As for maths, I try to use the volume of fairy tales (for example, the saying "Three Pigs"). But such activities require a lot of work. During such lessons children acquire not only mathematical knowledge, but also develop creativity, critical thinking, communication and other abilities.

I'm a primary education teacher. I did an activity with my fourth grade students planning a trip to Disneyland Paris because one of the classmates was going to celebrate Disneyland's birthday. Students were divided into 3 teams:
- the team I searched for the resort (it is a holiday and recreation resort in Marne-la-Vallée, a new city in the eastern part of Paris, France.) The complex is located 32 km away from the center of Paris and is located mostly in the commune of Chessy, Seine-et-Marne Address: Boulevard de Parc, 77700 Coupvray, France)
- the 2nd team calculated using the computer and Google Maps the airplane / car distance (2327 Km - 1047 lei, 98 Km / h, 7.5 l / 100 Km)
- The third team has searched for hotels where they can stay (Marriott's Village d'Ile-de-France is located in Bailly-Romainvilliers, in the countryside near Disneyland Paris, Explorers Hotel at Disneyland® Paris)
We used the computer, we calculated distances and prices for travel, accommodation, meals, we made euro-lei conversion. Students were particularly interested and worked with pleasure. Those who have already visited Disneyland have made recommendations for accommodation and transport.

By the moment I can´t apply some of this activities on my workshops, but it was very interesting the study of means, standard deviation… through shopping list. During my workshops I try to teach to children the 5 sense since point of view of Neuroscience. Everybody was really happy and proud of them because, the method that I use is similar to a quiz. Throwing bread is really a pity. The old, dry and hard bread can be reused for the preparation of numerous recipes, which come mainly from the tradition of "poor" and regional cuisine and that deserve to be rediscovered and readapted.
We propose to use stale bread in the preparation of the pancotto with potatoes, vegetables and legumes; It is a typical peasant dish, often used as a single dish.
Put the pot on the fire with a little water: add the garlic "dressed" and the potatoes, cut into pieces and salted. After 10 minutes add the washed vegetables and cook for about 10 minutes. Add the stale bread at the end. After about a minute drain everything, add the vegetables and season with plenty of extra virgin olive oil. Enjoy your meal!

The work I shared was last year's E twinning project with my 4th grade students.
In this study, we transformed Kizkalesi in Mersin into STEM + A project.
We have linked the history of Kizkalesi with our social studies course on our historical sites in the region and the subject of mathematics, the electrical circuits they put into the model in the science course, the science lesson they have explored, and the Turkish lesson with the legend they have learned.

Whenever I can and I see it applicable, within the study programme, I suggest real-world STEM activities to the students.

In fact, I have done several years the one mentioned about vectors and Marine Navigation.

However, I usually use two websites which make even more real the activity:
- On the first one (www.marinetraffic.com), the students can watch on real time the current worlwide marine traffic, providing them even more realistic data. Clicking on any vessel, they can obtain vital information about course, speed, trajectory, etc.
- On the second one (www.flightradar24.com), the students can watch on real time the flights taking place around the world, getting the same relevant data by clicking on the aircraft. I attach a picture of it.

Giving students the possibility of managing real data in real time truly encourage and engage them. Actually, after finishing these activities I always hear that someone wants to be a pilot...

In this one we used our laptop computers and a sound engineering/mixing software (free download) called "Audacity" to determine the speed of sound. We used a simple (drinking) straw to use it as an open/closed organ pipe whose length can be changed (independent variable) there by changing the wavelength of sound produced by blowing into the pipe.

Audacity can be used to record and analyse audio spectrum of the sound produced. After figuring out the first harmonic peak from it's spectrum we can determine the fundamental frequency of this sound (dependent variable).

We can then use data to find the speed of sound in air.

I had a recent activity with my students about soil erosion. The activity was in several stages. First we watched videos/images from National Geographic site. Next, we walked on the bank of the river near the school to see some evidence of the water erosion and took a lot of photos and made observations. We will going to build a 3D land-form and do experiments (wind blowing, water actions...). We did other experiments as well - using bottles filled with different kind of soil (with grass, leaves and simple) and poured water (students observed the role of the vegetation to keep the soil at his place). We intend to do also a brochure for share in the community.

Topics of the given activities are not appropriate for the grades I participated in my school. However, I can give an effective example from my class about ratio and proportion. At 6th grade, I distributed a recipe about how to cook muffin with cocoa and a check list to follow the process. I divided the class into 5 groups to do team work. The recipe I gave was for 4 people. And I wanted my students to prepare muffin for whole class, 28 people. Then, the students expanded the amount of muffin ingredients by using proportion. After all activities, each students tasted other groups' muffin to confirm if they use correct proportin or not. My first aim was to experience "cooperative work" as Rafael Montero said during the first video, then indicated how to use proportion in real life.
Without using modern techniques or technology, it is possible to make STEM in class!

I am primary school teacher and I recently applied the "Bicycle activity" with my students using a robot bicycle (made by Lego Mindstorms EV3) instead of a real one. The students explored the velocity by measuring, first, the time that the robot needed to cover 1 metre and, secondly, the distance that covered in 2 seconds. (They had to make arrangements in programming.) Then we discussed about velocity and I realised that they understood the concept and they really enjoyed the activity.

Hands on activity for sound waves: (empty bottles, pvc tubes and Casio Keyboard)

1. Different empty bottles with varying lengths were given to blow and hear the noise.

2. Students set the relationship between the length of the air column and the sound produced.

3. Longer the length of air column lower the sound they derived.

4. They were asked to roughly match the sound with the musical keyboard.

5. There were 7 bottles taken (chosen with precision) to represent the 7 keys.

6. Students filled bottles with water to match the keys of the keyboard and play the basic notes

Finding the frequency of the sound using tuning fork

7. Sets of tuning fork with marked Frequency. Set the tuning fork vibrate and understand the relation between pitch and frequency.

8. Students by blowing the air in tubes hear the sound . They will find the frequency of this sound using velocity, wavelength frequency relationship.

I taught the activity of the travel agency in the Geography lesson of a primary school, children of 8-9 years of age. We worked with Google Earth and Google maps, children worked in groups of 4-5. They really enjoyed the lesson and the virtual travel. A variety of learning subjects was introduced into the lesson such as Maths, Language and Environmental Education. I am a biology teacher and I had to teach students about osmosis. In order to motivate them and engage them in a real - world problem, I planned activities on how industries perform on preserving food. We focus on the use of salt in order to preserve some types of food like salted nuts or salted fish. Salting is the preservation of food with dry edible salt and is one of the oldest methods of preserving food. Salt inhibits the growth of microorganisms by drawing water out of microbial cells through osmosis. Any living cell in such an environment will become dehydrated through osmosis and die or become temporarily inactivated.
To understand the process of osmosis and its results in the function of cells we planned to work with osmosis under the microscope. We used onion as a model and we observed its cells under the microscope. In parallel, we immersed onion cells in salted water and observed them in the microscope.
I think that this was a very creative activity for students who had to work in the lab, set up the samples, experience with the microscope, collaborate among the group and discuss their findings and ideas on osmosis and its application in real - world problems.

I have been using STEM activities since the beginning of this year. Children are very excited, they prefer this lesson than going an excursion. I am very proud to have done this, namely that children want to go to school, be happy to come to school. So far we have completed one activity and started the second. The first was: "The_Catapult_Challenge". The children were divided into groups. Each group was tasked with discovering new knowledge. Each team had to solve the following problematic situation: "You have to be able to move a small object from one point to another with the help of a simple machine. Think about what you know about the dynamic and kinetic energy to apply them to your challenge, which is to design and construct a catapult that will throw as far as an object. Both iMac and iPad computers were used to find Catapult information. In particular, they searched for what catapults did in ancient times, how catapults work and what are the parts of the catapult. Then, each team was assigned to decide which catapult to construct by watching catapults diy videos. After deciding which catapult to build, they noted the materials they will need. The construction decision was taken after taking into account that a catapult should be constructed to launch as far as an object. When the catapults were constructed, the teams competed on how far the catapult of each team fired. There was no competition between them, just the joy of creating and discovering new knowledge.
The second activity will be: "The_Volcano_Challenge".
From the activities in the previous section, I prefer airplane activity. I will use it in our next challenge at my school.

I choose the plane activity but I modified it a bit. I have a class of 15 teenages so we used 2 robots that we programmed using arduino. Our grid was our lab floor which is made out of big tiles and each team had to guide the robot to tha target set by the other team.

I tried the chemistry activity in the bakery with my students of a lab course and it was really nice. They really enjoyed it! I gave them the problem solving one day before and let them all the time to explore useful resosurces, Then they showed me their plannings and start the work in the lab. As a laboratory report, they use the V of Gowin that I find very useful for the solution of problem solving in the lab.

I have been using STEM activities since the beginning of the second grade at primary school and we are still using them this year (now we are in third grade).  Children are very excited. We used it in our last excursion. At the begging we made a shopping list for entire class. They went to three supermarkets and made a list of prices. Then they divided the whole amount to each student. Collected the money and went with some parents to the cheapest supermarket and bought everything from the list. They used the knowledge accumulated in financial education lessons and have been saved 10 % of money gathared. They decided to put them into an acount and used it for our  next trip. I was very proud of them. At Science Lesson we learnt this week how we can do orientation in nature with a magnet, needle and a leaf. They are very curious and open to learn.

As an English teacher I chose the activity related to food but also the shopping list activity. I have been doing this activity with my students for celebrating Halloween. Students , in groups, from 7th grade (12 year olds) were asked to research about Halloween cookies. They had to be made with pumpkin. In groups they found a récipe and had to choose the best product for the best price (so they just brought leaflets from different supermarkets and made a list of the products and prices). They were asked to organize a list of products , prices, for the Halloween cookies. At home with parents each group prepared the Halloween cookies and brought to class to share with others.What was worked with students – problema solving (which Halloween cookie will we make?); identify different types of pumpkins (research online); manage a budget and cooking (learning quantities for baking the perfect cookie). Students were pleased and very happy , and could easily identify the solving a problema, making a list of products , comparing prices and having a budget to be real life challenges related to STEM.

I tried "the science behind cycling" activity.My students tried the activity in order.When one person was cycling others were collecting data.We kept the scores in a worksheet.We observed terms of physics like 'inertia' and 'friction'.So children thought scientifically.I think it was very useful for identifying the STEM aspect of everyday activity.I belive that my students will able to relate real world problems into stem activities.

I have used the physics activity from section 2.2: “How does it work: How do guitar strings produce different sounds?” in my 10^th grade students under the topic of Waves. I have tried to squeeze this activity for a lesson. I have applied this activity to lower achievement level class whose wants to be in career of sport, music or art. First of all, they have extremely enjoyed the class because of the engagement in daily life. During activity, they were not only trying to understand pitch and tone, also sound intensity. They have become more creative to make sound in guitar and measure main concepts. Unfortunately, taking picture or making video from your classroom is forbidden in my school because of violation of children rights. However, I gave my students piece of paper and request them reflect their ideas about our making sound from guitar lesson. Here some examples;

“If the whole physics lessons are engaging with the music till my high school year, I could be more successful than I am now.” –Erdem (who can play all kinds of instruments, piano, guitar, lute, etc)

“I don’t think that I can forget sound pitch, tone and intensity because I may use them when I am practicing my electro guitar.” – Göktuğ (who is quitar and basketball player)

I'm a teacher of technical disciplines at high school. One of the STEM activities that we have recently carried out is an experiment through which students learn how a DC generator works. Through the experiment, they found answers to the following questions:

- What are the factors on which the generated electric voltage depends?

Answer: Constructive factors, rotational speed and magnetic field strength

- What is the dependency relationship of the electromotive voltage generated by each of these factors?

Answer: Direct proportional dependence

The DC generator is used to supply laboratory equipment to constant voltage. The number of such equipment is not the same all the time. In this context, the question arises:

I decided to try from section 2.2 the airplane activity with my 9th grade students (15-16 years). Because the airplane activity was designed for primary or secondary school students, I thought it was too simple for high school students (9th grade) so I modified it a little. After I divided students in 6 groups of 4 pupils, I asked each group to find a paper model and a video that shows how that model is being built, searching the Internet. Subsequently, each group had to write down, on a paper, the building instructions of their model. Each group had chosen a number from 1 up to 6 and received the instructions from the group with the same number. In the end each group had to build the paper model from the instructions they received. Some of groups had succeeded, but some don’t, so we all analyzed after that, why this happened. We read the instructions together, and we have concluded that there was an algorithm in fact. So we tried to discover if all the 6 algorithms were correct and completely written. After I had been reading each algorithm students had to decide if that algorithm was complete, was clearly describe and correct or there were some lacks. They figure out that, in all cases, the group couldn’t build the model because the algorithm had some lacks. For each incomplete algorithm, we discussed which are the steps that need to be rewrite and how they should be rewrite correctly.

This activity was more time consuming that I initial thought. It couldn’t be completed in 1 hour it needs at least 2 hours. It was very fun for my students, initially they thought we are playing, not learning. They were totally engaged in all the activities and learned in a very funny, hands-on activity which is the importance of a good algorithm, the lacks that can appear and how we can describe a real world activity as an algorithm.

I have tried "The honey on our biscuit activity" with my primary students. First of all, they loved the idea of eating biscuits and drinking tea in the classrom. So, the warm up part was very nice for them. After that, we draw a tongue map on our board, and tried to explain and identify how many different tastes a human tongue can taste and where they are.
After their research about where honey comes, they presented it to the class and now they are looking forward to have another tasty lesson.
Their discovery about the hexagon, honey comb and tastes has become a permanent knowledge for them. It worked totally awesome!

I usually do an activity similar to “Shoping List”. Students must create an Excel spreadsheet with the fixed expenses of a family (renting, water, electricity, …) and the other variables expenses such as grocery, restaurants, clothes, … for each month.

They must also register the incoming of each family member.

Then, they must calculate the total expenses and the total incoming, the money left over (or missing) each month. They create another spreadsheet to calculate the average, minimum and maximum values for each type of expenditure throughout the year, and the accumulated value the money left over (or missing) over the year.

We did the bee activity. Actually it was a whole project. The students had to investigate bees, what kind of bees there are, what each kind does, how a bee hive looks like, what products they make and what products we humans make from honey. A beekeeper came to their class with all her equipment and talked about it. She also brought different kinds of honey for students to try and she explained how it's made. The last activity was going to the Bee Fair. After that students had to make posters and present the other students in school what they learned. The project was very interesting to the students and everything went quite well.

I have made the experience of photosynthesis with different variants. The same process is explained in the textbook of the students, but we apply it to the laboratory to integrate it from several points of view. The group was made up of secondary school students. Each part of the work was done by a group. These were the partial experiments: a) observe the growth of the plants in the presence and absence of light (this group had previous sessions to allow time for growth); b) with vegetables from the school kitchen, ordered from the cooks, the video experiment was carried out; c) extraction of vegetable pigments by alcohol chromatography on filter paper; d) observation of starch in leaves and storage structures when dyeing them with lugol / iodine; e) observation and photography of the stomata and the structure of a leaf to the microscope. To end the practice, each group presented their results and all the conclusions were united to give a unique explanation to the phenomenon of photosynthesis.

As school librarian I helped my STEM teachers when they had a project about bees and honey in our county. We searched for and found so many useful materials in digital libraries online and made useful presentation materials and brochures for presenting the project on state competition. As a librarian and related to this subject, I can recommend reading Maja Lunde's book The History of Bees. :) Unfortunately I don't have class or students because I don't teach any subject, but I would definitely choose Honey on my biscuit. They expressed that they will use what they learn in their daily lives. I did some additions before I started this event. I couldn't use any of the activities right now, but I do something similar to Shopping list. My students have to interview 30 people to chosen subject and then process the data by making tables and graphs that show frequencies and relative frequencies. They can use digital tools if they want to. The project improves understanding of graphs that can be seen in media.

We tried experiment with sodium alginate. We made like "Coca - cola" and "Sprite" caviars. All the proposed activities are really great! But none of them matches with my study matter, which is Mother Tongue (And I was affraid about it..).

So, I propose a PROJECT OF NON-FORMAL ACTIVITY CALLED „PhotoVoice”.

I applied this method of non-formal education toghther with my pupils of 13-14 years old.

This activity ran during 3 weeks (10 meetings).

Its aim was to make people (adults and children) aware about the importance of healthy feeding and it followed the following steps:

1. informational workshops about this method (face to face and online)

2. fixing the main theme / subject (“Do our city inhabitants eat healthy?”) and the needed resources

3. organizing the small groups and sharing / assuming the responsibilities

4. photo sessions (one week - especially negative real aspects, respecting privacy of persons, but positive examples could be recorded and used as follow-up)

5. workshop (selection of the best pictures and creating the proper messages)

6. organizing an exhibition in a public place

7*. flash idea: combining the PhotoVoice with Street Survey, registering the results, writing an article and publish it on the local newspaper.

I am a Physics teacher and I applied STEM activity related with simple machine subject in 11th grade students. firstly I randomly seperated my students groups including 4 students in each group. Then I gave them pulleys, rope and some masses like 100g, 200g, 400g and 500g. They had enough masses to make an experiment. I made them aware of or to remember the aim of usage simple machines and where we use simple machines in order to make easier our life. Then I told them the purpose of our activity and I told them they will lift up heavier masses by using smaller mass. Also they had be carefull about the distance taken by the masses. They firstly organize pully system that took waste of time for them. I think that was the most difficult part of the acticity for them. at the end of 40 minutes, all groups completed their activity and they reached the correct result. I observed that they really liked that activity embedded in lesson much more than traditional lesson. At the end of the activity I talked about the lesson with them. Some of them interpreted that that lesson was meaningfull for them because they understood the importance of physics in daily life. That was the essential point of the education.

I tried the "Phyisics of the sound" activity with my 11 years old students. We skipped the 2nd part (measurements of the frequency, wavelength, etc.) and we observed the "waveform" of the sound waves produced by some flutes. In my opinion it was funny and useful to inspire younger students. As it is clearly explained in the video, it is important that everything has been tested before. In particular, the Application should be pre-installed on your smartphone or tablet.

I studied the "Physics of bungee jumping" activity with my high school students of age 17. Watching videos of bungee jumping activity attracted their attention. Explaining what types of energies a bungee jumper has at each step was fun on a bungee model.

Conservation of total mechanical energy was easy for them to understand and apply. The formulas of kinetic, gravitational potential and elastic potential energy separately were easy to understand but forming an equation with the formulas of all energies was confusing for them. So I encouraged them to calculate the energies at each step separately and then insert the results in the equation to find what is asked. This way the students were more involved in solving the problem.

I bring to the class some advertising flyer, I print some facsimile paper money and ask them to prepare a shopping list using the prices on the flyer to organize a birthday party with the money they have. The biggest problem is to let everyone give his own contribute to the activity. Some children prefer to look and listen instead of collaborate. This is related with the young age but also with a personal attitude.

I've made an activity about velocity. Students have to decide a distance in meters and measure how much time they need to do this distance by walk, jump, slither and run. After that they have to record data on table and on a graph. The graph shown different straight lines with different slopes and we discuss what it means and some other questions. I usually approach science with practical activities bacasse it is the best way to engage students in real problems.

I did the Shopping List activity in my language arts class. I used the STEM content in a simplified version because of time constraints, then I modified with a language arts activity and had students do mini-reports on shops with the best prices. As I am "only" a student for biology I couldn't try the tasks with a real class by now. But I hope, I will once be able to try out the biology examples (soil/erosion - cake and alginate). First: I guess it helps a lot to remeber the topic if you don't only make an experiement but also EAT the results afterwards ;) , and second: both exercises open the way to bio-ethical discussions which I find very important to help the students develope responsibility.

I am a teacher in Education Degrees and I teach didactics of mathematics to prospective teachers. We have done an activity related to the Shopping List but with a much more daring staging. We have designed a workshop called MATH-CHEFF and we have taken it to a primary classroom with 12-year-old students. Each team had a fixed budget to prepare a menu. They had to find the recipes in a cookbook, see what ingredients they needed to buy and adjust to the budget when making the purchase. We have made plastic money available for them to pay their shopping at the supermarket. It has been an incredible experience. Everything worked very well because my students (primary teachers in the future) had taken care of every detail. We could improve it if we add computers. That way they could found the recipes not only in the cookbooks but in the internet. We would also carry supermarket catalogs to complement the products (and prices) that we could not take to the school due to lack of resources.

At the beginning they hesitated a bit but as soon as they made the first steps by building the plane following the given algorithm everything was ok. The second part was more fun as I slightly modified it a bit by allowing them to write down an algorithm of instructions to guide the plane to “take-off”, “fly” and “land”.

It was not possible for me to test one of the activities but I asked my students to identify the STEM aspect of an everyday activity. They work in the cookery lab once a week and I asked them to think about how cooking can be a vehicle for introducing and illustrating principles of science. I asked them to consider for example a simple ingredient they often use during their cookery lessons: flour. I then invited them to consider that: a farmer, expert in agricultural science, has to grow wheat to make flour. To do that he/she relies on meteorologists who study the weather and environmental experts who study the soil, climate change or pollution. The wheat is processed using machines invented and improved by mechanical engineers. The flour is tested by inspectors and food scientists to meet food safety standards, and chemists determine what additives will preserve the flour as it travels from a factory to a store.

One of the proposals we make comes after studying the fungi kingdom. I propose to perform an experiment that explains why yeasts are used in the kitchen.

I tried the guitar activity with the 9th grade students. Next to my classroom is the music classroom, so I borrowed from the music teacher the guitar and set of tuning forks. We used Advanced Spectrum Analyzer PRO app to measure the frequency. Students loved the activity. Also they were surprised that physics and music are so related to each other.

We do use STEM activities in classroom teaching depending on the topic. The topic which chose was different from the given topics. The students were to bring different materials from home and test their nature using pH paper. The response was overwhelming and the satisfaction they got was heartening. We are trying to plan more such activities in future.

I connected the topic with the students' everyday life:
1. As an indicator, we used red cabbage juice.
2. We tested the pH of everyday substances: oil, vinegar, soap, facial lotion, rainwater, baking powder, etc.
3. Students determined the pH of the above products. Then they laid down the substances according to the decreasing pH.
What worked?
- use of a natural, readily available indicator,
- curiosity of students and involvement in the experimentation of pH which products used by them every day.
- connecting experiences with students' everyday life.
What did not work?
- plastic glasses were very fragile, broke, cracked, you need to use glass goblets in the future,
- in the second group students used plastic, opaque cups, the effect of the experiments was not spectacular. The best will be transparent, glass glasses or mugs.

Problems encountered: oil was not cold enough;
If we had to redo the experience we would try to check the pH of the compound and the amount of agar to be used, in addition to the oil temperature;
we, at the suggestion of a pupil, tried to produce the spheres in distilled water, discovering that they were not formed.
Unfortunately we did not have much time but we used tools that were readily available at home. The experience was appreciated and as an extra activity it will be necessary to show other uses of gelitifiers in the real world.

I am a primary school teacher and in my weekly technology hour I go through some aspects of science with experiments: For example, we measured the pH of various substances, starting from water to oil, we hypothesized the floating of lemon, orange, clementine and lime; lastly the funniest experiment: the classic with effervescent tablets and water, sparkling drink and oil. The children were enthusiastic and understood that we need an initial attention to verify all the elements of analysis of the experiment, then to hypothesize to only at the end verify if the initial hypotheses were realized. As a primary school teacher, I was quite interested in the last two activities (paper planes and honey). I haven't tried any of them yet but I believe my students (and basically all students) will enthusiastic because they love creative activities, where they can work together, ask questions, make something, experiment and leave the school books aside. What we recently tried and they found engaging was a classic density activity where you can add sugar to water and food colouring, in order to change the density and create different layers that look like a rainbow.

It was appropriate for the children's age and developmental level. It was a very engaging activity for the children. The materials were easily available. Supporting their daily life skills was exciting for the children.
