Person 1: Why bother viewing literature through the Psychoanalytic perspective? Why should we still use it to analyze literature?

Psychoanalysis is the analysis of the brains reaction to one's experiences and how it affects them within literature. This can be used to determine the reasoning as to why a character acts the way they do given the current circumstances. We should still use it to analyze literature because it uses superego and ID to help the reader understand why something is happening and what the character's thought process may be.

Person 3: Psychoanalytic Analysis of Passage from Macbeth

"Methought I heard a voice cry "Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep" --the innocent sleep, / Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care" (2.2.47-49).
Answer the following:

the speaker and the one spoken to (could be himself/herself)

the context (what was happening at this point in the play)

Analyze this passage from the Psychoanalytic perspective. (Hint: What is Macbeth repressing?)

At this point in the play, Macbeth is talking to his subconscious mind. He is beginning to hear a voice, not of reason, but of warning. This warning is towards the people around him, making him think that they know what he is doing. This can be related to the 'Tell Tale Heart' and how the man character starts imagining things that make him go insane, thinking that he is going to be caught for what he did. According to the passage, Macbeth is very expressive with his feelings and this can play on the fact that since he had no one to express how he felt during that time, he instead created voices in his head to resemble his anxiety. At this time you could say that Macbeth is repressing his past self of being a "worthy gentleman", and not only is he anxious, but he also wants to still play the good guy and try to give a warning. In conclusion, Macbeth is fighting two different sides of himself in his subconscious mind.

Sigmund Freud displays how the Macbeths' guilt towards their murders comes through in different ways for each of them, for Macbeth it's through his visions of his victims which occur while he's conscious. For Lady Macbeth on the other hand, they manifest while she's unconscious, through her remorse and intent to leave murder behind that's displayed through her hand washing. Overall, Freud is explaining to us how people will try unsuccessfully to repress their emotions and how they emerge again despite their owners wishes.
