In the 1970' several countries began to claim Islands and varrious zones in the south china sea, such as Spirtaly Island, which possesses rich natural ressource and very importan fishing zone's.The current situation of the south China sea concern the following countries
China, Brunei Darussalem, Malaysia. The Philipines Taiwan, Vietnam, Us, and France. The specific location of the south China sea is interesting to others countries because , one third of the the world's maritime shipping passes through , and there is also a very diverse maritime wildlife, which is why China wants to increase its dominance in the south China sea. Also due to it geographical location as the area is one of world's busiest and most strategic shipping lanes because of the amount of fisheries that it possesses. The other world country involved is the USA , it is involved because they want to challenge China. Since China made a convention that allow themself too make excessive claims about internal water, territorial sea or exclusive economic zone. The USA believe that China is a threat. Therefore, USA navy is present in the south China sea. George Washington wrote a quote in which he say that he believes that without naval force nothing can change. As well as the US Naval forces nowadays for whom it is really important to show their strengh. This is a mark of honor and victory. And this a way to show their strengh and defend their value. China disrespect some of international rules and US respond thanks to its naval forces.

The South China Sea is surrounded by lots of countries, one which China. In 2012 started a dispute between China and The Philippines because China was occupying some territories illegally. China wants to take the seas’ contour by bullying small countries. The Chinese boats precut other countries boats in the South China Sea. China is interested in that territory because is a major trade conduit where 1/3 of the world’s boats pass, and that’s also why part of the world is interested in that conflict. Of course, the countries around wants to face China but it’s not easy. In 2014 a Chinese state-owned oil company decided to move one of its rigs into Vietnamese territory. That created more conflict between China and Vietnam. The USA are involved because of their will to help allies (peace in the seas) and to have a presence in this sea. However, they also want to show their power. That’s what it’s said on George Washington’s quote by “without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive”.

Loriane
Jennifer

Manon

Charlotte

Oan

Natacha

The Situation in the South China Sea:

For several decades, the islands and atolls of the South China Sea have been the subject of claims by the riparian countries of China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Sultanate of Brunei. As early as the 1970s, countries began to claim islands and various zones in the South China Sea, such as the Spratly Islands, which possess rich natural resources and fishing areas.

This sea holds tremendous strategic importance for its location, as it is the connecting link between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific OCEAN. In addition, one-third of the global shipping passes through it, carrying trillions of trade which makes it a significant geopolitical water body. China is trying to take over other countries' islands, and the Chinese government is trying to limit or even prevent the US presence in these waters. China claims almost all the space, in defiance of international law.

For example, recently, an armada of Chinese ships has appeared. This is a maritime militia, financed by China, to challenge the Philippines in their own waters.
On the other hand, the United States maintains a significant presence in these waters in order to protect its allies from Chinese attacks, so as to be able to protect itself, to defend itself against any potential attacks by the Chinese government in these waters. The large presence of American ships in these waters illustrates very well George Washington's quote that it is imperative to have a large navy and sea power in order to act on any scale and at any time. For him, naval power is the most important element in maintaining a power worthy of the name.

The south Chinese sea conflict erupted and is still present since September 4th, 1958, upon further analysis we learnt that the Chinese released a declaration announcing its extension of territory by twelve nautical miles. This decision was particularly interesting for china as it offered access to numerous aquatic resources like oil, gas and potential fisheries. Despite having its great attributes and benefits this extension of land does not please everyone, this territory is not only interesting to china but also several of its competitors, these competitors being some of the largest maritime powers; USA, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, all consider this land to be in fact their own, and as we can imagine, china simply declaring it is now theirs could not possibly be pleasing to hear when this territory is in fact yours. China has commenced its land reclamation and has started the construction of several POIs like airports, land extension to enlarge their exclusive economic zones, port construction for maritime exchange and military infrastructures. All this activity, as expected, leads to countries taking action, one of them being the “all mighty” USA naval fleet showing up to the party and some may say for the only reason being; to “show off” but on paper, to police the seas in their own way and as we can see today, take action and fight against china. On the subject of “showing off” this analogy has already been mentioned by George Washington, describing the USA as a glorious nation with all this pride, therefore inspiring the military to take out the big guns and show everyone what they’re made of.

alicia
Jules
Ella
Ambre

It starts september 4, 1958 , when China issued a declaration to expand its territories on the Sparkly islands.
The Americans allows themselves to navigate Chinese waters because there are naval authorizations.
Chinese forbide the access of the sea to the Americans.
That part of the world is interesting because of natural ressources like fishery ressources.
China do dual-carrier strike force exercices on the South China Sea.
The US is involved in the protection of the South China Sea, for many reasons: control the expansion of China which invade many little islands. And to avoid conflicts between bordering countries and to take advantages on the natural ressources. “without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious.” in this quote, G. Washington said that without a strong naval force the US can't do anything but with it they could be strong enough to control the seas. This is linked to the article because in this text we have learned that the US naval force goes to the South China sea and try to control what other countries do.

Marvin
Sacha
Maxence
Romane

In 1979, the FONOps (freedom of navigation operations) were created following the reclamation of the islands and therefore of the marine territories by China. China refused to respect the international law and takes advantage of the resources and fishing zones that are in these places. The countries around the South Sea are concerned by these conflicts: Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Maldives, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Vietnam... This maritime area is very coveted because there are many natural resources and fisheries. China wants to expand its marine territory and dominate this marine territory by extending over the entire sea. The Americans are involved in this conflict because they are afraid that China becomes too powerful. The US fleets are threaten by chinese because of the US fleets encroached in their territory. The link between the Washington quote and the naval operations are on the Chinese claim maritime areas that are not legitimate to theme but they don’t even have naval force to defend their “territory” and Georges Washington said that naval force is very important
jade hugo sefa
