I learned that malaria is a disease caused by a parasite. UTs occur when the urinary tract becomes infected, usually by bacteria. Evidence for the effectiveness of herbal medicines is generally very limited.

International development focuses on improving the well-being and economic conditions of people worldwide.

I enjoyed observing the consultations, learning parts of the language spoken in Ghana, and learning how people’s names begin with the day of the week they were born. I also learned how fast and efficient the consultations are. I think i can apply certain parts to my life by expanding my knowledge of languages, and being able to quickly diagnose patients in the future. I would like to stay involved with GB by keeping track of the condition of these communities, and someday visiting them too.

They have volunteers go build or brainstorm ways to keep communities cleaner. One example was the building of bathrooms

I am going to apply this to my life by using patient consultations as a way to improve my own social skills.

I learned about how to interact with patients and the medical culture in Ghana, like the fact that malaria and diabetes are very common. I will apply the same social skills the doctor used when talking to people or patients in the future. I can also keep in mind the common diseases and compare with other countries to find commonalities. I would like to stay involved with Global Brigades by keeping up with the newsletter and such.
