Christopher Paolini was born in Southern California and has lived most of his life in Montana's Paradise Valley with his parents and younger sister Angela. It was his passion for fantasy and the natural beauty of Montana that inspired the fantastic setting for Eragon, the first book in the Inheritance Cycle. He was fifteen when he wrote the first version of Eragon, which was eventually published in 2003 and immediately became a worldwide success. It was followed by Eldest, the second chapter of the Cycle that follows Eragon and the dragon Saphira, and then Brisingr and Inheritance. A talented artist, Christopher also designed the illustrations for the books. In his spare time he enjoys sharpening knives, playing video games, lifting heavy things, and searching for perfect copies of leather-bound notebooks.

source: https://www.wook.pt/autor/christopher-paolini/21219

1899 - 1961
Biography

1954 NOBEL LAUREATE FOR LITERATURE

Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961), American novelist and short story writer, was born in Oak Park, Chicago, and educated at the local high school. Hemingway's father was a doctor and passed on his enthusiasm for sports to his son. His mother had insisted that her son take up music, but Hemingway decided to become a journalist and writer. He initially worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star . In April 1918, during World War I, he enlisted as a volunteer and was posted to an ambulance unit on the Italian front. Shortly after arriving in Italy, he was wounded in one leg and transported to the Red Cross hospital. He returned to America and in 1919 went back to work as a reporter for the Toronto Star Weekly . His marriage to Hadley Richardson in 1921 was the first of his four marriages. In Europe, Hemingway worked as a correspondent. In Paris, where he left in 1922 to work for a Canadian newspaper, he met Gertrude Stein and frequented literary circles in the French capital. There he came into contact with other expatriates: Ezra Pound, James Joyce and Scott Fitzgerald. The book Three Stories and Ten Poems had a limited circulation in Paris (1924) and the following year the book of short stories In Our Time was published, which received the approval of American critics. Hemingway's early works revealed the influence of Ring Lardner and Sherwood Anderson, but the author's literary career developed fundamentally from the personal experiences that most marked him, among which were war and journalism. In 1926 the novel Torrents of Spring was published, a parody of Sherwood Anderson's book Dark Laughter . In the same year Hemingway published The Sun Also Rises (published in England under the title Fiesta ). This novel and the volume of short stories that followed ( Men Without Women , 1927) confirmed the writer's reputation. The action of The Sun Also Rises takes place in Paris and has as its protagonist an American journalist wounded in the war. The novel develops many of the issues central to Hemingway's work. In 1928, divorced from Hadley and married to Pauline Pfeiffer, the writer moved to Key West, Florida. Later that year Hemingway's father committed suicide. In his 1929 novel, A Farewell to Arms, the theme of war was taken up again. Meanwhile, his trips to Spain, Africa and Cuba revealed to him activities that he considered symbols of the human condition: bullfighting and hunting. The former inspired him to write Death in the Afternoon (1932), one of his best books. In The Green Hills of Africa (1935) he described the adventures of a safari, a theme he returned to in The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber , both included in The First 49 Stories (1938). The experience of war marked Hemingway again when he went to Spain as a correspondent during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). One of his best known novels, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), was inspired by this episode. Hemingway also wrote Across the River and Into the Trees (1950) and The Old Man and The Sea, a short novel about a Cuban fisherman's struggle against a giant fish. The book, considered a parable of humanity, won Hemingway the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Hemingway's innovative style, which preferred economy of language and clean words to literary devices and extensive psychological analysis, influenced subsequent generations of American writers. Hemingway, who wanted to be a man of action, a craftsman rather than an artist, cultivated an ideal of virility, seeking to circumvent the ultimate defeat of the human condition: death. He committed suicide on July 2, 1961.

Ernest Hemingway. In Infopédia [Online].
