Gold is used in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight to represent more than wealth. It is a representation of status, honor, and nobility. The text states: “Adorned with glittering jewels the length of the dock, / Then caught up tight with a thong in a criss-cross knot / Where many a bell tinkled brightly, all burnished gold. / So monstrous a mount, so mighty a man in the saddle / Was never once encountered on all this earth / till then;” (Sir Gawain).

Red symbolizes passion and motivation in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which ends good and bad for Sir Gawain. An example is when Sir Gawain follows his inner motivations when accepting the quest that the Green Knight offers, which ends up going well for him. However, he follows his inner motivations by taking the sash secretly, which ends poorly due to him bypassing his morals in order to get ahead.

One could represent the individual nature of honor between the characters in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. This could be a part of the characterization in the story because each character wants to be the most honorable, like being the first.

Two seems to be a part of the characterization and plot of the story. Whenever it appears, it is part of the good decisions that Sir Gawain made before messing up. Sir Gawain accepts the Green Knight’s quest, and chops his neck in two. He later resists the Green Knight’s wife twice, before accepting the sash without informing the Green Knight. Two seems to represent a sort of success with moral action before failure. This is like an athlete in a sport doing well in the first two rounds before becoming tired in the third.
