         <description><![CDATA[<p>Classification system developed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists to estimate the medical risks for surgery with anesthesia. Now used to estimate risk in treatment even w/out anesthesia planned</p><p><strong>ASA I </strong>Patients are considered to be normal and healthy. No dental management alterations required </p><p><strong>ASA II </strong>Patients have mild to moderate systemic disease <strong>ASA I </strong>patients who demonstrate a more extreme anxiety and fear toward dentistry. Patients are able to walk up one flight of stairs or two level city blocks, but will have to stop after completion of the exercise because of distress. </p><p><strong>ASA III </strong>Patients have severe systemic disease that limits activity, but is not incapacitating. Patients are able to walk up one flight of stairs or two level city blocks, but will have to stop in route because of distress. If dental care is indicated, stress reduction protocol is indicated. </p><p><strong>ASA IV** </strong>Patients have severe systemic disease that limits activity and is a constant threat to life. Patients are unable to walk up one flight of stairs or two level city blocks. Distress is present even at rest. Elective dental care should be postponed.</p><p><strong> ASA V**</strong> Patients are moribund and are not expected to survive more than 24 hours. Elective dental treatment is contraindicated. </p><p><strong>ASA VI**</strong> Clinically dead patients being maintained for harvesting of organs.</p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>Location: clinic's emergency procedures manual in station 8</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Phone Location</strong></p><p> There are 2 phones located the clinic assistant’s and instructor’s stations in clinic, one at the instructor station in the laboratory, and one in the consultation/file room. Additionally, two telephones can be found at the clinic reception area. </p><p><strong>Clinical Emergency Assistance Plan</strong> </p><p>In the event of a medical emergency, the following steps should be followed: If a patient is experiencing an emergency: </p><p>1. Rescuer #1, Stay calm. </p><p>     The student will stay with the patient, notify the closest student or faculty member (Rescuer #2) by saying, “CODE RED.” Begin the CAB’s of Basic Life support </p><p><br/></p><p>2. Rescuer #2: notified student or faculty member: </p><p> If student, must notify RDH instructor or DDS immediately </p><p>     Bring the oxygen tank and emergency mobile cart located at the instructor station  </p><p>     Dial 9-1-1 if clinic instructor or supervising Dentist indicates a need.  </p><p>911 Operator information: </p><p> My name is:____________________________  </p><p>     My phone # is: (713) 395-5454  </p><p>     The emergency is:__________________________  </p><p>     My location is: Pima Medical Institute Dental Hygiene Clinic  11125 Equity Dr, Ste. 100  Houston, TX 77041  </p><p>     I will be waiting outside the entrance of our facility. </p><p>     Go to the entrance to meet the EMS and bring them to the emergency site</p><p> 3. Rescuer #1: Once the faculty member arrives, remain to assist that faculty member. </p><p>     Assist with BLS and monitoring of vital signs.  </p><p>     If instructor is present, verify DDS and EMS has been notified </p><p>     Record in writing a description of the emergency, time it occurred, signs, symptoms, and vital signs.  </p><p>     Notify Program Director once situation allows 4. Emergency Follow up  </p><p>All persons (Dentist, Instructor, Student[s]) directly involved in the emergency will meet to provide the following information:  </p><p>  Description and cause of emergency </p><p>  Corrective actions to prevent future situation, if applicable  Accident/incident report will be completed and given to Program Director</p><p>  Patient will be called to determine current health status and discussion will be documented in patient chart.</p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>Fire: Emergency Procedures </p><p>Students and staff are instructed on the location and proper use of the fire extinguishers as well as the fire evacuation plan during their respective orientation. </p><p>• Students are instructed to stay together during a fire evacuation</p><p> • Persons on the scene will evacuate the area and enact the Emergency Response System by dialing 9-1-1 on the nearest telephone in a safe area.</p><p> • Extinguishers are to be used at the user’s discretion as time and safety allows and only after the area is evacuated. • In the case of a fire, persons should exit by way of the nearest safe evacuation route. o Evacuation routes are posted near the door of each classroom in the facility. </p><p>• Instructors will make sure that all students have evacuated their classroom and close the classroom door prior to exiting the building.</p><p><br/></p><p>First Aid Kits </p><p>The dental clinic maintains two first aid kits. The kits are located in the sterilization area in the appropriately labeled cabinet. The kits contain various bandages, band aids, tweezers, gloves, gauze rolls, cleansing wipes, and an instant cold pack. Any student, staff, or faculty member may access these supplies as deemed necessary for a medical incident. The kits will be checked monthly and immediately after use by the designated dental hygiene safety coordinator. A log will be kept and initialed after each monthly check.</p><p> Eyewash Stations </p><p>Eyewash stations are located on the sinks in the following location: dental materials lab. These stations are connected to the building water supply. In the case of any person exposed to injurious corrosive materials or debris entering the eye, that person will be taken to the closest eyewash station. The eye(s) will be flushed for a minimum of 15 minutes. The need for any evaluative medical follow-up shall then be determined.</p><p> Chemical Spill Kit </p><p>The chemical spill kits are located in sterilization and the dental materials wet lab in the cabinet labeled “Spill Kit.” They contain absorbent material, safety goggles, utility gloves, a biohazard bag, a biohazard sticker, and a scoop/ broom with pan. This kit will be used for the cleanup and disposal of any spilled fixer, developer, disinfectants, acids, or corrosives. The kit will be checked monthly and immediately after use by the designated dental hygiene safety coordinator. A log will be kept and initialed after each monthly check</p>]]></description>
