Example of Modern day Yellow Journalism

Through the use of social media "yellow journalism" shows up more often than some may think. Fake news is all over the internet but it also appears in photographs. Photoshop or "Face tune" is an example of yellow journalism because you are not seeing the "true face of somebody. For example when somebody takes a picture of themselves but doesn't like how far back their hairline is or how big their nose may look they can digitally enhance the photo to make their hairline come forward or their nose smaller. It is also commonly used on body figures and getting the perfect "model style" figure. Although what you are seeing seems it may actually be digitally enhanced or photo shop to make the person seem like they have the perfect face and figure.

Pro Imperialism Cartoon

In this cartoon Uncle Sam is holding multiple babies named Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines and Hawaii. The countries are represented by babies because they can't take care of themselves and are making a mess of things. Uncle Sam is trying to keep all of them controlled and happy, but it is hard to do when there are so many. The babies are pulling Uncle Sams hair which could relate to these countries taking pieces of America. This could be no big deal because it is only a tiny piece but if bigger "chunks" were pulled out it could have a larger affect. America is risking a piece of themselves for these countries so they can "grow up" or become more civilized.

In this cartoon America's "greatest" are being carried around by the so called uncivilized, savage people around the island. This shows that America is just using these countries and their people like pack mules. America doesn't care about the treatment of the natives, or if they are destroying the environment, they only care about what America can get out of these other countries. After these countries have given America everything they've asked for and more America discards them and acts like nothing happened

Kipling described the people being imperialized as "half devil and half child" which is not true. These people are seen as uncivilized because they have different ways of life. Kipling described them this way because most if them weren't "properly dressed and looked like children because they would only have clothing covering certain areas.

I think that Kipling is for imperialism because he believes that it is our duty to help these people become civilized even if it is a burden. I do not share the same viewpoints as him because even though these people were viewed as savages it did not justify white men coming in and trying to change these people's lives forcefully.

In some cases like Alaska, yes. The U.S purchased Alaska fro Russia in order to help the Russians come out of debt from the Crimean war. In the process of purchasing Alaska neither the U.S or Russia could gain any enemies or loose any allies. The Alaskan purchase just strengthened their relationship and opened up trade between the 2 countries. In this case, imperialism was justified.
