According to the Odyssey, Odysseus encountered Polyphemus during his trip back home in Ithaca. Him and his men wandered into a cave filled with an abundance of food. Little did they know a cyclopes named Polyphemus lived in the cave. When Polyphemus had returned, he sealed off the doorway. They were trapped. Polyphemus saw Odysseus’ men and ate two of them and proceed to consume two more the next day. Subsequently, Odysseus offered up strong wine to Polyphemus which intoxicated him. Before falling into a deep sleep from the drunk wine, Polyphemus asked Odysseus what his name was an Odysseus lied by saying “No one.” During Polyphemus’ deep sleep Odysseus stabbed him in the eye with a wooden stake and Polyphemus cried out. When the others heard his scream they rushed over and asked him what happened and Polyphemus said, “No one blinded me.” His friend thought that god was attacking him, so they told him to pray. The next morning Odysseus escaped with his remaining men and finally revealed his name, thus; enraging Polyphemus. Polyphemus asked his father Poseidon to make sure Odysseus would not make his trip home. Ultimately, this caused Odysseus to deviate from his journey home.
