habitat/reproduction/adaptation
Adults usually live in woodlands and lay eggs in vernal pools. During winter, they take shelter in leaf litter.
Wood frogs are found throughout the forests of Alaska and the northeast. They are found in smaller numbers as far south as Alabama and northwest into Idaho. They are the only frog that lives north of the Arctic Circle.
Wood frogs have adapted to super cold climates by freezing over the winter. During this time, they stop breathing and their hearts cease to beat. They produce a special antifreeze substance that prevents ice from freezing within their cells, which would be deadly. Ice does form, however, in the spaces between the cells. When the weather warms, the frogs thaw and begin feeding and mating again. Wood frogs are one of the first frogs to begin the breeding season.
Food web/nutrients:
Wood frogs are eaten by garter snakes, birds such as herons or crows, and mammals such as raccoons, skunks, or weasels. Their tadpoles are eaten by shorebirds, snakes and large insects like giant water bugs and diving beetles.
Wood frogs eat insects, worms and other small animals without backbones.
classification:
Domain: | eukaryote
Kingdom: | Animalia
Phylum: | Chordata
Class: | Amphibia
Order: | Anura
Family: | Ranidae
Genus: | Lithobates
Species: | L. sylvaticus

They store water because both living and dead plants can hold large amounts of water inside their cells. Sphagnum moss tends to acidify its surroundings.
Adaptions: Moss can adapt very well to northern places . Northern places that have this moss make the sphagnum species to thrive. "Research on northern bogs in Europe and North America has found that climate change and atmospheric nitrogen deposition can shift species composition of bog communities and release carbon" (Australian Government 2007)
Species Interaction and Behaviors- Without sphagnums moss there would be no bogs in certain areas. Mosses do not produce flowers or
seeds. Moss grows from spores which are
encountered and produced in fruiting bodies, is called capsules.(Forestry Commission, 2016) Rainfall actually does good to mosses for water content.
Nutrition: Moss absorbs nutrients, water, and sunlight to create food by photosynthesis.
Reproduction: Sphagnum moss reproduces by spores, which is very similar to the flowering plant's seed.

Morel Mushrooms are most likely to be found in a forested atmosphere. When in forested areas they will usually be found by apple trees, elm trees ,and sycamore trees. They will be under these trees. They produce under trees or objects because of the cool damp nutrients.
Adaptions: After Cold weather or a fire morels are still able to continue on with their life cycle in order to reproduce. They will sprout and appear when weather is moderate for mushroom.
Species Interaction & Behaviors- Mushrooms interact with animals like deer and squirrels. Animals like to eat mushrooms. They also interact with trees/ wood because its beneficial to both. "The host and fungi benefit. The fungi and the host exchange nutrients between the mycelium of the fungi and the roots of the tree."( Brady Long, 2006)
Nutrition: Feed off organic material due to being a heterotrophic.
Reproduction: They reproduce by releasing spores which grow into a fungus.

Habitat:
Plant can survive in winter.

In Forests, swamps, wetland margins (edges of wetlands)
Growth form:

the plant is a tree

Leaf form
-the leaves are needle-like
-the leaves are scale-like

Classification:
- domain eukaryote
- Phylum pinophyta
- Genus Abies
- Kingdom Plantae, the Plants Division Coniferophyta, the Conifers Class Pinopsida Order Pinales Family Pinaceae, the Pines, Spruce, and Firs Genus Abies, the true firs, about 40 species in the Northern Hemisphere, nine, including balsamea, native to the US
adaptations:
-Fir trees, like most conifers, have adventitious roots, thick barks, and rapid life cycles to help them survive in extreme conditions and withstand forest fires. Fir trees are equipped with special root structures, called adventitious roots, which grow directly from their trunks to help keep them anchored on steep mountain slopes and resist strong pressure from blowing winds.
Reproduction:
Balsam fir is monoecious. In spring, 1 year before pollination, male (staminate) and female (ovulate or pistillate) strobili differentiate from flower buds. The strobili are microscopically recognizable at this time. Male strobili usually are distinguishable before the female strobili because they initially develop more rapidly. Flower buds usually open in late May or early June before vegetative buds but have been reported as flowering as early as late April.
Nutrients:
Balsam fir has been reported as growing on soils of a wide range of acidity.
Balsam fir grows on a wide range of inorganic and organic soils originating from glaciation and generally falling within the acid Spodosol, Inceptisol, and Histosol soil orders.

Eggs are laid singly in sites subject to inundation by rain water. It is known that Ae. vexans eggs need some moisture for embryonation.
- Only the female Aedes mosquito bites as it needs the protein in blood to develop its eggs.

- The mosquito becomes infective approximately seven days after it has bitten a person carrying the virus. This is the extrinsic incubation period, during which time the virus replicates in the mosquito and reaches the salivary glands.

- Peak biting is at dawn and dusk.

- The average lifespan of an Aedes mosquito in Nature is two weeks.

- The mosquito can lay eggs about three times in its lifetime, and about 100 eggs are produced each time.
Adaption:
- Mosquitoes are cold-blooded creatures and do not generally bite in temperatures below 50F. In Connecticut, some adult mosquitoes become inactive with the onset of cold weather and enter into hibernation before the first frost. Other mosquitoes die in the fall but have winter-hardy eggs, which hibernate as embryos.
-The eggs can lie dormant in dry conditions for up to about nine months, after which they can hatch if exposed to favourable conditions, i.e. water and food.
Its abundance depends upon availability of floodwater pools.
This is a floodwater mosquito, meaning that the eggs are laid offshore and when a heavy rain comes the water rises, floods the eggs and the egg hatches. Eggs are mainly found in freshwater pools and depressions.

Virtually any transient water can support Ae. vexans larvae, but rainpools in unshaded areas produce the largest broods.
Habitats:
The species is most common in grassy pools that border wooded areas but specimens can be encountered in partially shaded woodland pools, roadside ditches, and vernal pools in open fields. Climate change is not effecting the mosquito.

species interactions:
Mosquitoes can have both positive and negative impacts on the ecosystem. As part of their useful role, the larvae of mosquitoes live in water and provide food for fish and other wildlife, including larger larvae of other species such as dragonflies. The larvae themselves eat microscopic organic matter in the water, helping to recycle it. Adult mosquitoes make up part of the diet of some insect-eating animals, such as birds, bats, adult dragonflies and spiders. They also help pollinate some flowers, when they consume nectar.

They grow in Alaska and Canada, all the way south to Mexico! They withstand such a wide range in climatic conditions by growing at lower altitudes in the north and higher altitudes in the south. Quaking aspens are conspicuously absent from the U.S. southeast, because there are no high elevation mountains to act as habitat.
Adaptations - It is a shade-intolerant, disturbed site species and is quickly replaced in succession by more tolerant species.
Nutrition - Sunlight and Oxygen
Reproduction - Quaking aspens can reproduce via pollen and eggs that are contained in pendulous flowers called catkins. However, it’s much more common for them to reproduce asexually by sending up new stems from a single root system.

Adult males follow silk and chemical cues left by females. Generally, males then use a combination of visual and seismic (vibratory) behaviors to court their potential mate. They often wave and rhythmically thump their pedipalps and/or abdomen on the ground. Most species also create sounds (usually inaudible to humans) by quickly rubbing together two corresponding parts of their body, known as "stridulatory files."

The trunk of the birch is covered with a thick, papery bark that protects the inner wood from damage. This bark contains resinous oils that make it durable and resistant to decay.

Nutrition
Sunlight, oxygen, nutritious and fertile soil

Reproduction
The birches begin producing seed when 10–15 years old. Seed quality is usually higher in years with warm springs and abundant flowering. The seed ripens in late summer to early autumn and disperses mostly within a few months. The birch seed-coat contains a germination inhibitor that can be neutralized by stratification or by light.

Project Summary Summary- Each of us four students were responsible for five different categories of species group. The five categories are Prokaryote, Non- woody plant, Woody plant, Invertebrate animal, and Vertebrate animal. This is the list of species group us students chose through out the Biodiversity Lab Project.Nikki Skifstrom: Morel Mushroom, Sphagnum Moss, Northern White Cedar, Cedar Beetle, and White -tail deer.Kevin Alicea: Bacillus Megaterium, Lady Fern, Quaking Aspen, Wolf Spider, and Crow.Brianna Blais: Nevicula, Sneezeweed, Paper Birch, Bandit woolly-bear caterpillar, and Gray Squirrel.Claire Herzig: Lichen, Purple Stemmed-aster, Balsam Fir, Aedes Vexans (Mosquito), and Wood Frog.We are located in International Falls MN and go to Rainy River Community College. We collected these species through out certain areas located at Rainy River Community College. We had three different spots we collected species. The places we collected species were called Aspen- Fir, Cedar Forest, and Forest Edge. Aspen Fir was 68 degrees F, wind speed was .8 mph, vegetation height was 2ft, and vegetation density was low. Forest Edge was 64 degrees F, wind speed was .7 mph, vegetation height was 4 feet , and vegetation density was very low. Cedar Forest was 62.4 degrees F, wind speed was .8 mph, vegetation height was less than 1 feet, and vegetation density was very low.
