What parents need to know about how children learn to read, understand the meaning of evidence-based reading practices, and what you can do to build basic reading skills in your child. Parents will also learn how to look for indicators of dyslexia and how to advocate for their child with the IEP team.

Mi presentación es acerca de como prevenir el Bullying, pero principalmente, como identificar si alguna persona es blanco de bullying, como ayudarles, y como guiar a alguien que presenta comportamientos de bullying hacia otra gente. My presentation is about Bullying prevention, and it will focus mainly on learning how to identify if someone is being bullied, how to help, and how to help and guide someone who is bullying others. I am hoping this presentation will provide you all with tips and recommendations that could be useful in the community and school settings, and ideas on how to connect with institutions and resources that could aid with bullying prevention.

This workshop includes an introduction to the Self Determination Program (SDP). Self-Determination provides individuals and their families with more freedom, control, and responsibility in choosing services and supports to help them meet objectives in their individual program plan. Participants create a person-centered plan which guides their spending plan created from an individual budget; based on the last 12 months of the traditional services. SDP is now available to all eligible individuals receiving services from regional center.

Mi objetivo es compartir trayectorias de desarrollo del lenguaje en niños bilingües junto con estrategias para apoyar a los estudiantes a través de su propia trayectoria de desarrollo.

This presentation will share strategies to support communication development at home for bilingual children with varied communication levels/ support needs. I aim to share language development trajectories in bilingual children along with strategies to support students along developmental trajectories. 

En este taller, el Dr. Hernández abordará los conceptos básicos de la tecnología de asistencia a nivel de distrito. Responderá preguntas frecuentes formuladas por los padres en las reuniones del IEP en referencia al papel de la la tecnología de asistencia, el rol del Patólogo del habla y el equipo del IEP. Ha preparado algunas respuestas informativas a conceptos erróneos y malentendidos comunes sobre el uso y las contribuciones de los equipos del IEP para abordar los sistemas de Comunicación aumentativa y alternativa (AAC*) desde el nivel del distrito hasta la instrucción y la práctica en el aula.

In this workshop, Dr. Hernandez will address the basics of Assistive Technology at the district level. He will answer frequent questions asked at I.E.P. meetings by parents in reference to the role of Assistive Technology, the role of the Speech Pathologist, and the I.E.P. team. He has prepared some informational responses to common misconceptions, and misunderstandings to the use and contributions of the I.E.P. teams to address Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems from the district level to the classroom instruction and practice.

Supported Decision Making is an approach that empowers individuals with disabilities to make decisions on their own with the support of trusted people on their team.  It allows a person to maintain more control in their life which leads to greater independence and autonomy.  This workshop will provide information about Supported Decision Making; how it can work; examples of agreements, including responsibilities of supporters.  The workshop will also include time for question and answers as well as strategy building discussion.

A Parent's Guide to Planning, Supporting & Managing School Transitions.  This workshop is intended to enhance the meaningful partnership between parents and educators in developing portable IEPs so as to plan "soft landings" into new classrooms, schools, programs, and districts.

En este taller elaborado a partir de las necesidades básicas de aprendizaje de los padres en la sexualidad de sus hijos aprenderán estrategias para poder afrontar los retos.

This workshop is designed to inform parents or caregivers responsible for their children's education and specifically their education in sexuality. Sexual education begins with life, the first institution that must assume it is the family and for parents it is often a complex process. That is why in order to help their children develop appropriate attitudes in their sexual life and prevent abuse towards them by other people it is necessary to acquire the appropriate information to detect and prevent maladaptive behaviors.

In this workshop developed from the basic learning needs of parents in the sexuality of their children, they will learn strategies to be able to face the challenges.

Dennis Hernandez, born and raised in San Diego County, specifically living in the Chula Vista area, has worked for Sweetwater Union High School District for twenty-eight years. He has served the Sweetwater Special Education Department as the Assistive Technology, Alternative Instruction Media Technician for 19 years. He has worked for High Tech High Charter Schools as the Assistive Technology Specialist in San Diego County. Last three years Dr. Hernandez has worked on Special Projects in the Special Services Department providing Para-educator training while continuing to promote Assistive Technology for students with disabilities and providing consultations for I.E.P. teams.

Tatiana Ramos Gallardo is a bilingual speech and language pathologist currently pursuing a doctorate in Communication Sciences and Disorders at SDSU and UCSD. Her research interests include language development in bilingual children and culturally and linguistically sustaining interventions and assessment with bilingual children.

Joe R Goyos has spent the last 20 years in the disability field in many roles and capacities.  At the age of 12 his father had an accident and suffered a spine injury which left him with limited mobility.  His family was non-English speaking Cuban immigrants, as a result Joe translate at all appointment for his mom. That led him to a career that took an interesting path through the disability world.  In 2010, his family moved to California where he worked at Support for Families in San Francisco till the family move again in 2020 to San Diego and he joined Exceptional Family Resource Center.

Mary Rios is a Senior Advocate Specialist with the Advocacy Community Engagement team at DRC, Mary has been an advocate for over 28 years. 18 of those years with DRC. Mary has extensive knowledge in the areas of regional center, public benefits such as In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), Social Security benefits, and Special Education. Mary is bilingual and provides trainings to inform individuals with disabilities about their rights and focuses on empowering individuals with disabilities to become self-advocates.

My name is Janisse Marron-Hernandez, and I am a Behavior Specialist for the San Diego Regional Center. I was born and grew up in Tijuana, Baja California, and I moved to San Diego when I graduated High School to pursue a career. I have a Master’s degree in Education with emphasis in Autism, and I am Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). I love learning about human behavior, and in my free time I enjoy drawing, painting, singing, watch and go to baseball games.

Beatriz Nuñez-Hernández is a person with empathy and leadership with the ethical principles that govern her profession. Mother of a daughter with a disability who died 14 years ago. Her passion for collaborating with parents without putting the disability before the person.

Graduated in Psychology from the Humanities University in Tijuana Baja California. Master's Degree in Humanistic Gestalt Psychotherapy with more than 4 years of experience working in crisis intervention, grief and loss with a Diploma in Sexology, Diploma in couples and family therapy, and a Diploma in Gestalt psychotherapy for children and adolescents.

Dr. Dueñas’ primary research interests are in identifying and validating social communication interventions delivered by natural change agents to individuals on the autism spectrum and related developmental disorders. As part of this work, she is interested in addressing disparities in service provision for underserved families of children on the autism spectrum by developing and testing culturally informed educational and clinical practices. She has published her work in the Exceptional Children, Autism, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Behavior Analysis Research and Practice, Journal of Special Education Technology, and Education and Treatment of Children.

I'm an author of young adults books. I love to write about Halloween all year around, and I also do photography. I'm working part-time at AMC theaters, and I'm currently enrolled in Continuing Education Classes. I have a cat and a dog.

Sebastian is a self-Advocate and a College student taking continuing education classes. Sebastian is in the self-determination program and has started his business making ice-cream.

Guillermo Gonzalez holds a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from San Diego State and is an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC). He has worked at The Institute for Effective Education with people with psychiatric and developmental disabilities. As the school counselor, he works with students ages 8-24 across four different schools and programs for TIEE. Guillermo regularly conducts individual/group counseling, workshops, and presentations on Coping Skills, Mindfulness, and Self Advocacy.

JEFF HOFFMAN is a school psychologist and department leader for 31 years. He has worked with a wide variety of student populations for both Washington, DC and San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). He has been in charge of the SDUSD School Psychology Department since 2021 and has been part of SDUSD since 2015.

Karla fue contratada por primera vez en diciembre de 2020 como coordinadora de servicios bilingües en el Valle Imperial. Luego, Karla hizo la transición a Especialista en Elección de Participantes en mayo de 2022 y se convirtió en Entrenadora de Pensadores Centrados en la Persona en 2023. Actualmente, Karla ayuda a apoyar al Valle Imperial con la capacitación de SDP tanto interna como externamente y actualmente está trabajando en su maestría.

Claudia has been a Participant Choice Specialist for SDRC since April 2022. Before becoming a PCS Claudia was a bilingual service coordinator first hired in 2020. Claudia has an MBA and is currently in the UC San Diego Extended Studies Paralegal certificate program. Claudia has a background in education and teaching as well as 8+ years working with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Karla was first hired in December 2020 as a bilingual service coordinator in the Imperial Valley. Karla then transitioned to a Participant Choice Specialist in May 2022 and became a Person-Centered Thinker Trainer in 2023. Karla currently helps support the Imperial Valley with SDP training both internally and externally and is currently working on her Master’s degree.

Maria Fernanda Iriarte is a Senior Attorney with Disability Rights California. Her expertise is in the area of public benefits.

Debbie Marshall is currently a Community Program Specialist for the State Council on Developmental Disabilities- San Diego, Imperial Office. She has over 35 years of experience in working with families and individuals that experience life with a disability.

Alexis has worked for the San Diego Regional Center for 22 years.  She is currently a Program Manager of a Children’s Unit in the National City office.  Prior to this, she was a Service Coordinator for 19 years, working with the Early Start, Children, Transition Age Youth, and Adults.  Alexis has a Master of Social Work degree from the Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Leticia Galván, also known as Sebastián's mother. Since Leticia received Sebastián's diagnosis, her desire to know more about his condition began and that has led her to participate in conferences like this one, leadership programs and any activity that can benefit Sebastián. Currently, apart from supporting Sebastián, she is a promoter of the PUENTE program, dedicated to working with families with children with special needs. She is very proud of Sebastián and despite the continuous challenges she believes that a good attitude is the best way to carry out day to day life.

Dr. Alberto M. Ochoa is Professor Emeritus in the College of Education at SDSU, with the rank of full Professor Emeritus. He began his academic work at SDSU in 1975. He has served as Chair of the Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education (Formerly Policy Studies) at San

Diego State University for over 15 years. He also served as the Academic Director of the Joint Doctoral Program between Claremont University and SDSU (1999-2005). In the PLC Department, he has been responsible for the implementation and evaluation of the bilingual teacher education programs at the elementary and secondary levels. At SDSU he has maintained an active record of professional development, grant writing and service to the community. His academic work is action research based, while combining theory and practice in the resolution of

equity problems confronting social and educational institutions. He seeks the challenge of participating in community and institutional development programs/projects that have as their goal to promote democratic schooling and broad based community participation in the decisions that affect the quality of life of school communities--in both domestic and international settings.

Dr. Palmer is currently with the San Diego Unified School District and chairs the psychology department with a reading subject area, and is also the school psychologist at Nipaquay Elementary School. She has worked with SDUSD as a school psychologist for the past 16 years. She is the lead school psychologist and has worked extensively with her colleagues to increase knowledge of best practices and the latest research in reading and in multiple other areas of professional practice for 11 years.
