Paragraph 1

When recounting the events leading up to and after Madeline dying, the narrator mentions the physician and how “ I will not deny that when I called to mind the sinister countenance of the person whom I met upon the staircase” (329). Yet, in previous texts, page 324, the narrator describes the man [as he] “wore a mingled expression of low cunning and perplexity” (324). No, not any better but not quite this drastic and horror-filled. The House of Usher seems to be warping the narrator's perception and maybe even Roderick’s mental state has some influence too.

"I endeavored to believe that much, if not all of what I felt, was due to the bewildering influence of the gloomy furniture of the room--of the dark and tattered draperie, which tortured into motion by the breath of a rising tempest, swayed fitfully to fro upon the walls, and rustled uneasily about the decorations of the bed."
p.329

This quote describes how the narrator felt during his stay in Usher mansion. In medieval times the castles were often cold and cramped. The narrator describes how his atmosphere drastically changed his mood/feeling at the moment. He was already feeling uneasy about the burial of Madeline. He describes a dark and closed area where to him everything looks wrong or like its in the wrong place. The medieval castles where made of stone which made them cold and built for defense not comfort. The narrator's atmosphere and space seems to only provide a room over his head but not the comfort that one would feel in one's house.

“Having deposited our mournful burden upon tressels within this region of horror, we partially turned aside the yet unscrewed lid of the coffin, and looked upon the face of the tenant. A striking similitude between the brother and the sister now arrested my attention.”
p.330

This quote shows an example of how Usher found likeness in his sister Madeline's burial because it was in a dark dungeon; it was both their style. And the Narrator realized how Madeline and Usher were both very similar to each other. Because they both find beauty and truth in the supernatural. You can tell by their lifestyles and their daily clothes, words etc.. Even their mansion was old and creaky.

“ The vault in which we placed it (and which had been so long unopened that our torches, half smothered in its oppressive atmosphere, gave us little opportunity for investigation) was small, damp, and entirely without means of admission for light: lying, at great depth.” p.329

This quote describes the atmosphere of the dungeon-like place where they buried Madeline; it relates to the Romantic and Gothic literature because of its mansion, and the dark, damp, quarters her body lay to rest at. Also super Gothic because of darkness and the unused dungeon-like quarters, everything was eerie, quiet and dark with little to no light. It also describes the mysterious atmosphere and sets the mood for the burial of Madeline.

“...I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the darkness of the chamber, harkended--I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit promoted me--to certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm at long intervals, I knew not whence.”
p.330

This quote describes how the narrator tried to feel comfortable in the horrible conditions/atmosphere of the mansion. The atmosphere was so putting and dark and gloomy it made him feel like there were outside forces affecting him such as spirit. The weather even had him feeling terribly sick. The sounds and everything around him were overwhelming. He had his gut feeling that this place was off or something was off.

The narrator notices afterward, Roderick's behavior change and his condition worsen. The narrator is left scared and says this, “ It was no wonder that his condition terrified—that it infected me” (330).
