This picture, although powerful and very meaningful, is kind of gross simply because of the imagery and wording that they use. Scumbags are a slang term for used condoms, and it is also an attack on the Catholic church.

This picture is a more broad issue but was made for the time of the Act Up movement. I will never forget visiting the UN in New York City, which had a running total of US military spending per day and being amazed at what this value was. This image puts the number into perspective.

Why was art so fundamental to this movement?

Art was so fundamental to this movement because the images are made out of anger and fear, and those emotions are really conveyed in the images and word choice used in the art. I think that Act Up activists used art because their art grabs the attention of people who see it. It makes it very easy to see that there are people who are mad, and it took the stigma out of AIDS.

She also looks like she's won whatever she was fighting for. It's hard to put into words what her facial expression conveys but its very easy to understand.

The signs of the Trump rally have been so fascinating to see. It's amazing because children got involved, not really knowing the extent of sexism which exists in the world, but nonetheless made handmade signs that are inspirational. It reminded me of a NYT article of Women's marches around the world in 2017.

Consider “Queers Read This”: What role did anger play in this movement? Where did that anger come from?

Anger was powerful in this movement because the gay community was fearful and also mad about how they were/are treated. To be told that AIDS is "the cure" to people of your sexuality is outrageous. The anger came from the members of the gay community watching their friends die while they fear for their own lives. It came from people who felt betrayed by their own country. It came from years of pent-up anger after being called "faggot' day after day. This article was beautiful in the sense that it was someone's raw emotions, with no sugar coating.
