By 1526, slaves were being imported to Cuba from African countries. About 200 years later, Havana was captured by the British but then returned to them just a year later in the Treaty of Paris. Then from 1868-1878, Cuba fought the Ten Years War for freedom from their parent country of Spain. The war ended with a truce and promises from Spain to make reforms on their rule that were never actually met. Nine years later, however, slavery was abolished in Cuba. By 1902, the Cubans finally gained their independence from Spain and had their own president, but the Platt Amendment kept Cuba under the protection and guidance of the U.S. In 1925, violent protests against so-called discrimination from the U.S. and their own country's corruption lead to the forming of the Socialist Party, one of the stepping stones for the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. After the U.S. abandons protection over Cuba, Castro leads a revolt against the new president that proves successful due to the lack of U.S. military involvement. After more revolts and mutiny, all U.S.-Cuban relationships are severed, thus beginning the Cuban Missile Crisis and leading to the one sole political party established by Castro in Cuba- the Cuban Communist Party. By 1972, Castro is elected President through the Communist Party.
