Stanley's initial job was as an electrician for an early telegraph key and fire alarm manufacturer. He later worked in a metal-plating shop before joining Hiram Maxim, the inventor of the machine gun and an early innovator in the electrical field. As Maxim's assistant, Stanley oversaw one of the nation's first electrical installations in a Fifth Avenue store in New York.
