The average life expectancy for women and men in Malaysia is 76 and 73 years, respectively.
In Asian culture, the responsibility of caring for elderly parents tends to fall on the shoulders of the children and their extended family. 
In fact, it was fairly common for childless couples or unmarried individuals to adopt a child so that they would have someone to care for them when they became old and frail. 
Unfortunately, these practices are no longer the norm in this modern era.

MALAYSIA, like other parts of the world, is experiencing an ageing population phenomenon. Department of Statistics data illustrate that in 2005, seven per cent of the older population were aged 60 years and over.
Following the adoption of the National Policy for the Elderly in 1995, issues regarding an ageing population have gained increasing attention. Malaysia, too, has acknowledged the urgency of this challenge, and preparing to address this phenomenon.
There is a need to increase public awareness and also planning to develop infrastructure, as well as to support action-oriented research that will directly translate to comprehensive and cohesive policies to protect not just the current older Malaysians but also the future of all Malaysians.
We recently heard the various promises made by several of our politicians in better meeting the needs of our elderly. Sadly, these have not transpired as espoused.
More disconcertingly, a recently released media report clearly indicated that certain government departments are quite openly suggesting the opposite of what the leaders had promised.
Care providers for the aged are an important part of services for the elderly.
